  1. Interesting thread, I can add my experience to this ..I bought the tomtom heart rate and audio watch which had almost everything I needed from a sports tracking watch ..but there was just something missing..I loved the Fenix watch ..it made me so jas..lol..I know sounds silly. The sad reality is whenever I'd see someone with one on their arm I would go green with envy..and in my mind I would try justify that my watch did everything the Fenix could do..anyway come Christmas 2018 I figured stuff this ..I work hard can't afford it really but took the plunge and bought the 5x
..omg the best decision I could HV done..besides it being super efficient and can tell u **** u never thought existed ..it just looked like the bomb to me..love it for golf gym cycling walking running ..my advice dude ..if it's a Fenix u want don't waste ur time with almost watches ..u will never truly be happy and whatever u spend will be a waste..yes u will try justify but in ur heart u know it's the Fenix u want.. Yolo..**** it ..it's only money you would waste on something else in any case..buy the watch u want

  4. I agree with hubland; there is a certain sense of confidence snd security buying from a fellow hubber believing this community is devoid of scamsters found in this crazy f@cked up world we living in...and sad to be reminded that this isn't entirely the case.

This guy is definitely being a douche..and should be named and shamed to protect any future Hubber being conned by non full disclosure..and newbies to learn rules of engagement.

  5. Why would they come to SA to train, we ride on these roads and risk the hazards because we don't have other options..my god they hv the pick of the world and they choose to come here. It is unfortunately sad for us living here to hv this further negative publicity pertaining to the risks associated with cycling ..but maybe this is what's needed to create a high profile awareness amongst the law makers

  6. Are you seriously telling me that having your most talented players picked off by Euros every year makes no difference to our playing strength?

The global landscape has changed and we are playing a poor standard of rugby in empty stadiums across our domestic competitions.

I don't think he is a good coach either but I was trying to make a different point about comparing stats to a different era.

There are many factors that contribute to failure in sa rugby..yes players chasing euros in the rich euro competition adds to this..but the how do you explain all Blacks and Australia team's success as their players contribute to this..

Im not sure if this has been addressed before ..in an interview with Justin Marshall on the success of all black rugby and how they have been able to produce consistent good teams although there is a change with new players coming into the team and what's South Africa doing wrong.

    His response

In New Zealand all rugby players and coaches subscribe to the same brand of rugby..running attacking ball in hand look for gaps off loads etc..which sounds pretty simplistic, it starts at grassroots level all the way up to super rugby..so when a slot is available in the national team they are already familiar with their roles and requirements for that position..

In SA he observed there are too many different types of approaches by the different franchises; so a person performs well in the Lions team he is chosen into Springboks and so too for sharks Stormers etc..but then here the issue they now need to be taught the coaches game plan which now isn't natural for them and it once again becomes a disjointed affair which is visible as the players don't don't instinctively gel in a game lack of fluidity..to make matters worse many are even chosen in position that they haven't played in their franchise..which further adds to the disaster..

We as a rugby nation also are extremely frustrated and impatient and want results NOW...which is almost impossible.

Ok AC gets the boot a new coach is appointed and he has his own approach and he may not have the players in the squad that conforms to his style..then what..

Are we doing enough to get the most out of the natural talent available here.

Why are there so many ex sa players in other national teams.. is transformation hindering our progress and the best players truly not being picked??

  7. Hi guys

Last night I had the unenviable pleasure of doing the moonlit mass ride in Cape Town, what a wonderful evening to be out on the bike but the conditions and environment was truly crazy as this also coincided with the annual switching on of the lights and a free concert on the parade...I digress

..in this haze of activity while on the bike I had pedestrian step into the Rd without looking causing me to take evasive action and swerve into the pavement with the result my light hit the ground and the bracket broke.

Where can I get a replacement mounting alternatively is it advisable to glue this piece of plastic.

  8. Its with great sadness that I've read about so many people who have lost their prized possessions at these events. We do everything we can to protect ourselves against theft while at our homes yet for many there is this false sense of comfort and security post an event.

I recall (cringing) how often I'd leave my bike at the then argus bike park with very little controls in place or left the bike on the cars bike rack with nothing more than a bungee cord securing it yet felt safe that it was 'all cyclists'

Times unfortunately have changed as these events have now become the shopping grounds of thieves who probably are fellow cyclists, sorry I use the term rather loosely, who prey on our sense of security and lowered guard. Yes I know it's a small percentage in relation to the number of ppl entering these events but to the person whose bike has been stolen it represents 100% and significant.

What must be done about it

I suggest the event organisers needs to have more stringent controls in place even go as far as the security contractors being liable for the theft.

Personally going forward my bike is going to go from under my bum onto my car and immediately going home. Yes it's sad as there nothing more rewarding that catching up with mates but I wouldn't be able to relax wondering whether my bike will still be at the bike park.

To those who have had bikes stolen I feel for you, what's the hub communities views on combatting this scourge!!

  9. I think we have to accept that in this country we are not safe doing anything in a public space. The gun carry topic has been discussed many times, with many differing opinions, and most seem to agree that carrying a gun while riding alone is probably risky.

However, I have been involved in several group rides of 6 - 10 riders, where we have designated one competent gun handler as a carrier. Everyone in the group knows he is carrying, and we make sure he is always placed in the best protected position in the group, in areas of high risk.

In my opinion this is a workable solution, and I have felt very secure knowing that if anything hits the fan, we at least have a fighting chance of repelling armed attackers. It's not ideal, but neither are our living conditions in this country.

It really is very sad to acknowledge that cycling has now become a strategic war type scenario in which the armed person in your group is protected to give you a fighting chance of survival, however this appears to be a way to offer confidence and security whilst indulging in an activity that brings us so much pleasure. I am a gun owner and often go out on rides alone and for many years have enjoyed the natural beauty of the western cape around smits winkel, misty cliffs but this has become a minefield not to be attempted anymore. The idea of carrying a firearm as a sole rider adds to the responsibility and stress of the activity that i often am discouraged from even venturing out the door..and frustrated that we are living under siege and our destiny is controlled by a handful of miscreants. I have have read the thread of  'to carry or not', with great interest hoping to find some easy way of overcoming the technical challenges ofriding, drawing the firearm and protecting oneself...as i hate the feeling of helplessness id experience staring at an adrenaline filled panga wielding person who literally has my life in his hands, the question then begs to be asked,  ...is cycling worth it despite the immense joy and satisfaction i get while on the bike while to a thief all he sees is a 2k score and me standing in his way??
