  1. Here is another discussion on the topic, https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/113902-prof-tim-noakes-u-turn-on-carbohydrates/page__st__576#entry2232321 Regarding this "study."
  2. 1. Sensational title. 2. This study was based on a dietary survey. So not actually a study. 3. One can’t prove causation through correlating statistics collected from questionnaires. 4. Humans are not mice, so that part shouldn't actually be taken into account. 5. The "study" only refers to the "protein consumption" of animal or plant forms, not once did it specifically mention meat, eggs, dairy, fish etc. The protein sources could have been from junk food. 6. The results were observed, not proven. 7. As Mayhem said, there was no control. Andreas Eenfeldt gave it a more appropriate title: “There is a 20 percent chance that meat quadruples the risk of cancer for people under the age of 65 and reduces the risk for older people.” As for the Kidney disease part, http://authoritynutrition.com/how-to-win-an-argument-with-a-nutritionist/ Nutritionist Says: “Protein is Bad For Your Kidneys” Answer: It is often claimed that a high protein intake can cause harm to the kidneys, but this is false. Even though it is important for people with pre-existing kidney disease to reduce protein, the same is not true for people with healthy kidneys. The studies show that a high protein intake has no detrimental effects of kidney function in healthy people, not even in bodybuilders that eat massive amounts of protein. Studies Manninen AH. 3. I'll go search what you have posted at a later stage so I apologies in advance if you have covered it. On one of my rides in December I was having a chat with one of my close training partners. He was saying that at one point he went to see a cardiologist for some or other reason which I can't remember. Long story short, the man asked him the same question; are you using anti-inflammatories? Which he was at the time. A part of the cardiologists story was that Cataflam-D, when used in conjunction with some other supplements (might have been something found in muscle bulking products or something like PhedraCut) caused cardiac side effects in a number of his patients. Also claiming that there is some correlation between Diclofenac and Heroin, as far as origins go (Google doesn't shed any light on this subject.) The doctor prescribed Celebrex as a safer alternative. Do you know anything to the same effect or something that contradicts it; the cardiac problems, origins or is there a "lesser of two evils" as far as NSAIDs go? Reason for asking is because the man nearly lives on the stuff to try and ride pain free, especially around multiday events.
  4. Dallas Green, a truly talented artist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KSQ6Be45UM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdIni7f01_Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBaxIgb08Rk
  5. Was your rear wheel in the direct "path" of your cars exhaust at some point? Looks that way by the select few black spokes.
  6. I was thinking the other day that maybe this is where carbo loading originated. Studies were conducted on athletes which were on diets that would be labelled as "carb restricted" in modern dietary guidelines. Thus when an athlete topped up their stores to 100% or there about by carbo loading on a carb restricted diet, they experienced optimal performance as a result. And things may have escalated from there on (as far as sport and nutrition is concerned wrt high CHO diets.) This probably isn't exactly the case though. So in my opinion, carbo loading does work iff (if and only if) you are on a diet with <150-200g CHO and you are carbo loading on produce such as sweet potatoes, squashes, fruit etc. This obviously doesn't quite apply to those on ketogenic diets. EDIT: made it less vague.
  7. Pfffft. The road bike is just there to offer variety, I don't ride it often enough to know what mileage I get on it's drivetrain to be honest It's my MTB, 2x10 XT drivetrain excluding the 105 (it wears well and is cheap) chain. By dry I just meant that there is close to zero mud and lots of dust that can stick to the chain. Dirt roady is an apt description of the majority of my riding.
  8. Very dry conditions and ride often on roads that are covered in fine dust. This includes lots of interval training. Being lightweight also helps, I got 10000km on my last cassette and 38T chainring. I use Shimano 105 chains.
  9. I rode solo last year. It hurt, A LOT! Piece of advice, don't do it on a HT.
  10. Awesome, are you riding it solo, 2 man or 4 man?
  11. I've been using Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF, which is the same as power steering fluid) for nearly a year now. Excellent in wet conditions, but one needs to reapply after 50-60km or so in dusty conditions. I get about 3600-3700km per chain with wiping/rinsing the chain off between rides and cleaning it twice a week. I used engine oil prior to the ATF but found it to attract too much dirt in the dusty conditions that I ride in. All this being said, I just bought myself Smoove to try out in hope that it would last longer that 90km.
  12. Try and send them a PM. If the link doesn't work, search for EasyBike under members. https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum/user/18997-easybike/
  13. Most likely because the club were standing 3/4 abreast in front of the eye-witness' car? edit: sp
  14. I disagree with the tucked in elbows. They give you no control if it is a steep technical climb where you are fighting for grip. Elbows out will give you better control as you have more room to move the bars around to keep the front wheel on track.
  15. <2hrs low intensity = Water <2hrs high intensity = Diluted apple juice (50/50) >2hrs = Diluted apple juice (50/50) + Gels/Banana Races = Race mix + Gels (and Coke if I stop at a water table) In my opinion, why use only water on the bike when you can consume something on the bike to aid in your recovery later/limit your losses thus not needing to replace as much of your glycogen stores? One needs optimal recovery in order to get quality rides in, day after day. Side note: It takes a lot longer to recover from any ride that starts going over 4 hours in comparison to a ride that is 4 hours or less. The only real benefit of 5 hour rides is that they get you mentally strong. That being said we are all different, so what works for you, works for you.
  16. I think it would have been around 2600 entries across the board. As for how many were brave enough to start, no idea.
  17. Good deal, I mean she is a beaut with awesome spec. Alloy calipers and alloy brake levers with hi profile alloy Vitesse racing rims Shimano 21 speed derailleur 700 mm hi performance tires Shimano Revo shifters Alloy water bottle cage Edit: not to mention the kick stand.
  18. Aaadriaaaan...
  19. One of our cars (Fortuner) have been using the e-toll roads daily since it started on the 3rd of December and yet we haven't received an invoice yet. This is well over 2.5 months down the line and yet we've received invoices for every other car. It is going to be interesting to see the account as there were 2 trips with the MTB and road bike on the roof.
  20. Advendurance doesn't own this event, so it is the local guys that are in charge of most of the event aspects. Just in case you want to point fingers at me.
  21. If it makes you feel any better, you'll move one position up on Saturday. I went to the physio today (first time ever) and have been instructed to stay off the bike for 2-3 weeks as she fixes all of my muscle imbalances and weak core. I'll still be in Sabie for the weekend though, helping the Advendurance guys a bit where needed.
  22. A 1x10 setup?
  23. I see that the times are in line with last years, with Andrew Mclean only 2min slower over the 3 days compared to last year (granted it might be the difference between team and solo.) edit: last years results Bridgestone_Route66MTB_Experience_2013_Result.pdf
  24. Anybody that rode last year as well as now, did the route change much?
