  1. I'd go for the Arch EX or maybe even Flows on Hope hubs. If you haven't been riding SS before it may be prudent to rather get the normal rather than SS specific hubs so you can chuck a cassette on the bike and ride it if gears if your knees decide to pack up or you simply don't enjoy it. You get cogs with a rather wide contact point / base to minimise freehub damage when running SS. Oh ya and you could probably get that wheelset landed in SA for not a hell of a lot more than 4K if you shop around online.
  2. Hey Steve did you buy the Niner steel or carbon fork? I've been looking for one of the steel forks for my MCR but they're scarce and pricey. I've spent quite a bit of time using an On One Carbon such as the one on your bike on both an On One Inbred 29 as well as a Niner MCR...there's absolutely nothing wrong with them...light, cheap and works a treat. HDP - My buddy is around 6.2" and fits on a Medium Inbred 29" so I reckon you'd be OK on a large, depending on whether you want your bike to feel more like fun or more like barge. Perhaps keep in mind that the Inbred 29 isn't fond of an overly long stem.
  3. Were you # 14?
  4. I've broken a 9 speed chain on my SS...also at the powerlink. Not so "power" as it turns out. I've used a halflink off CRC which is completely bulletproof, looks the business and helps with getting the length right but I've been reading on the net that halflinks are more prone to wearing / "stretching" (whatever you do don't tell anyone I called it that!) than a normal link chain ... I'd love to hear some debate from our resident mythbusters on that. Currently running a proper SS chain...only because it was on special though any 8 speed or BMX chain should do the trick just fine. A mate of mine had huge issues dropping the chain on his SS with SS specific cog and chainring, when he switched from 9 speed chain to wider halflink the problem stopped. Not everyone has this issue but in his case it sorted the problem out.
  5. Oh how I would love to be adding my name to that list.
  6. Check on the www, others have done it as well. I was going to do same some time ago on an old steel Giant ATX, I went as far as buying the file but ended up getting rid of the bike before I could get stuck into it. As long as it allows you to tension the chain somewhat as it wears out, you haven't compromised the strength of the dropouts by filing them too aggressively and the QR binds strongly enough to avoid the wheel moving I doubt there would be an issue. Post a pic of the bike to get me through this long day which, in retrospect, I really should have taken off....
  7. Switched from Avid to XT and the only thing I am kicking myself about is that I didn't do it years ago. No more rotor rub, easy peasy set and forget, levers feel rock solid compared to the Avids which had a lot of play in them and deadly one finger braking power....happy days.
  8. Learn to ride with "loose" hands rather than holding onto the bars for dear life, keep your weight back a bit more than you usually would when encountering rocks and bumps so your legs take more of the hits and your hands and arms less. Fat tyre, low pressure up front and you won't look back again.
  9. Borat ... is that YOU???
  10. There was a guy trying to sell a Santa Cruz Juliana dually not long ago on the hub, if you do a search on the classifieds I'm sure you'll find it. My wife has one and being womans specific they're pretty tiny
  11. A colleague of mine did it on a Giant Anthem 26 which he bought second hand for 10K and loved the ride. Another friend of mine spent 50K on a Tallboy ... also loved the ride...but afterwards admitted that they got totally swept up and carried away by the hype of it all and completely overspent and overgunned themselves on equipment. Long story short...you don't have a spend a fortune to have a jol.
  12. The hundred bucks or whatever is small change compared to the peace of mind and potential fines you'll get.
  13. I like it ... wouldn't buy it though. How did you do that BTW?

Mods can you maybe merge this with the "riding with kids" thread?

An3 and GuyP....from what age can you start using the halfwheeler? My laaitie is 2 years 4 months and can ride his balance bike feet up no problem and he's fairly wild on it...I'm bit worried he'll lose focus, let go of the bars and go flying off the half-wheeler the same way he thought it would be a good idea to climb off a swing in full flight the other day.
  16. Thanks! You've no idea how much time I've spent searching for that today...
  17. What frame is William Keith riding on? He's usually on a van Nicholas 26 but someone posted a pic in one of the many Epic threads where it looked like a Cruz but I can't find it for love or money.

When I use my iBert or trailer I ride at 50% of normal speed / skill / risk level, the odds of my laaitie blikseming off his scoot bike or the steps at home are far greater. In fact he did himself a beaut of a chin-graze yesterday....and then shook off the tears and got back on to ride some more. I have one of the Giant halfwheelers still waiting in it's box in the garage till the sprog is a bit bigger, can't wait to try it.
  19. Except for the one time when I left my hard but not overinflated freshly mounted (UST Nevegal on UST rims) tyre in the back of my bakkie in the sun....BOOOOM!!!! Bead ruined tyre stuffed game over start again.
  20. Before And this is how you REALLY don't want to look after yours...muddy SS race in Oak Valley. I had the saddle on my all weather all condition no maintenance ride race commute have fun love it don't fuss about it steel SS....but had regrets after the day above and decided to mount my Selle for wet winter months instead...the Brooks is just too beautiful to ruin...
  21. Her photo should be in the "pics that make me want to ride" thread.
  22. Sorry mate but Giant has already filled that spot...
  23. You're going to have a hard time beating me to the first medium Pyga hitting the classifieds!
  24. Hey you can see my house from up there!

This isn't monstrous but it'll work nicely on a 456 or similar bike. https://www.bikehub.co.za/index.php?app=hubmarket&do=view_item&item_id=23409
