My personal preference, a heavier bike rides better than a lighter bike (even when climbing a hill). I had a +- 15kg Mongoose, now a ride a 11.7kg Raleigh. The Mongoose was way better than the Raleigh uphill. Also, the Mongoose was dual susp and the Raleigh is hardtail. It's fine if you have a light bike for uphill, but for the downhill part, a heavier bike would theoretically go faster. More mass = more speed (don't remember the exact formula from school)!? But then again, you can say a lighter bike has less friction on the road when going downhill.

If you have nothing, minimal is a lot (not taking the side of the criminals, just saying).

I get great deals on secondhand 26" bikes from my lbs. But if and when I want to buy a new bike, it will have to be a 29er!

Here in Kimberley the 26" bike is only ridden by a handful of people.

How does it compare in toughness with the Knysna Oyster Festival 80km race?

As far as I know, you should take the item to the shop you bought it at, then the courier is between the shop and the supplier. That is the way I did it in the past If you work direct with the supplier, you may be responsible for the courier cost, it also happened to me in the past.

Maxxis (Crossmark) has no problem sealing!

As far as I know, if your tire gets a cut, you need a new tire. I am able to plug a small hole, but I can't fix a cut.

On my previous bike I only upgraded my tires from Kenda to Maxxis. You will be pleasantly surprised at what difference a set on 'nicer' tires will do.

I'm always happy if something break, then I can get a new one. Not so happy with opening the wallet. The happiness and sadness cancels each other out, so my feeling stays neutral when I buy new parts!!!

And learn from the mistakes you make, like my mistake on my first Argus. I had two bottles filled with Energade. Almost did not complete the race. If it wasn't for the last water point, wouldn't have finished the race.

I remember my first race (which started my cycling 'career'). I came first in the 10km race, way back in 2001 (on a Game special). I think I did a 5 or 10km race when I was like 5 years old, but I don't count that as my first race.
