  1. I've got the older model Direto which I've had for about two years. I've done 500 hours / 15,000km on it and I've not had one single issue. 100% faultless. I'd highly recommend Elite trainers.
  2. Wow, that's a lot of people searching! I was up on TM on Sunday in the mist - it would be a scary place to be lost. Hoping he's found soon.

  4. I (sort of) did that a while ago, but the other way around. Some really nice riding out there.
  5. Since seeing the old pump hand car things, I've been interested in this idea. I often watch the railway line bend and flow next to the road along the mountains (normally taking a more scenic or exciting route) while driving and have wished to be able to do something like this. You could get one of those trailer attachments to go on the back of the bike to carry the 'rig'. Should be able to have a bracing / tracking arm behind it to keep it running on the track, same as you'd have on the front wheel.
  6. I choose all of my things quite carefully - it's not very often that I get something on a whim, so this concept has no appeal to me. Plus, I've already got all of the things already... Getting a random new wine every now and then does sound like something I could go for though.
  7. A few months ago I built up a hybrid bike for my trainer. As its only for the trainer it has no back wheel and no brakes but I used a 26" frame with rigid forks, gravel flared bars and 1x road gears. I like the look of it though, so I've been thinking about making a version for outside. With this idea stewing in my head for a few months, last week I saw an ad pop up on here for a Cotic Solaris frame going for a steal so I snapped it up quickly without really formulating a plan. Now I've been told I can't use a carbon fork on a steel bike. Is this a thing? Spent hours over the weekend looking for steel forks (this is half the fun, right? Finding all the parts) and came across one which I like with a thru axle. I'm a bit concerned about axle to crown heights being a bit too low, but I can't find any definitive answers on this. Guess I'll have to just try it out and see. The bigger problem though is that I'm meant to be making a bike for my wife after my daughter took over my wife's bike. How do I convince the Mrs that I need another bike before she gets one? I was half thinking that this frame could be for her, but it's probably going to be too big...

  9. If you've already got the NX stuff, then yes just use that. The Sunrace cassette will just bolt on. You can use the existing crank, just get a 104 BCD narrow wide chainring and stick it onto where the middle chainring currently lives.
  10. I've got the Anatomic PacMe shell jacket and love it. It's in no way waterproof, but it keeps me warm without overheating throughout winter. I wear arm sleeves under it for extra comfort and less sticking to sweaty arms. If this is what you're looking at I'd highly recommend it. Are you after a rain jacket or just something to keep you warm?
  11. I've been riding Rangers for years, but think its time to try out some Enjoy shorts. They look good and I've never heard a bad word about any of their products.
  12. It also depends on which year model you're talking about. I'm also 1.8m tall and have had the older Anthem and the newer one too. On the older one the medium was probably a bit small for me (especially with the little stem I had on) but the newer version (also a medium) with the same stem fits me like a glove.

  14. Any more details on the bikes? Just listing brand isn't going to help much. Models? Parts fitted? Any distinguishing marks or features?
  15. I made one of these in my old warehouse shop to get bikes onto a mazanine level. I had a bunch of old sailing stuff so used the blocks, pulleys and cleats to get it to work. It was effortless to lift just about anything (I lifted myself once for funzies) and wouldn't fall if you let go of the rope. I was pretty happy with it.
  16. I've had both. The XT is hands down the better drive train. Its far more tactile and needs no adjusting at all. In general the GX is more 'fiddly'
  17. I managed to do it last year, and am still going strong this year Most of my riding was on the MTB and I did 12,481km and climbed 229,302m. I'm happiest with the climbing meters as at the beginning of the year I was only trying to reach 100,000m. I logged 372 rides and 99 runs (there were quite a few 'double days'). It wasn't all plain sailing throughout the year though and I did have some setbacks and some situations which required creative thinking. Some of the notable ones: I got the big snip; I got all of the bad side effects from having the yellow fever jab; I crashed twice in two consecutive days injuring my hand; I had two long air travel days (18ish hours) and I broke my road bike early in the year. Then there's the more minor "inconveniences" like when it rains non stop for days or a child gets sick and needs to be collected from school when I had planned to go riding in the afternoon... But overall, it was great! The first two weeks were difficult for me last year - I felt fatigued, hungry and tired as my body was adjusting to the extra load. But after that it was all good . It becomes part of your routine and starts feeling normal. For anyone sitting on the fence, I suggest trying it out. You might just enjoy it, and you get to see a lot more than you might expect.
  18. So this is my year. 365 day challenge complete. Started out the year doing a lot of riding on the trainer, then the trainer ate my carbon dropouts... No more road biking for me. From about May onwards I was only on the MTB outside in the wild.. In June I started the Uwe Koetter Rise Challenge (essentially climb as much as possible) and I did 168,000m elevation gain between June and the end of November. There were some seriously hard days in there with being "forced" to ride everyday and climb as much as possible in a sustainable way to be able to do it all again tomorrow. The whole of December has been recovery for me Highlight of the year for me was cycling all the way around and up Kilimanjaro. Loved that. Started out the year with a goal of trying to get to 100,000m elevation gain and no plans to do the 365 challenge, so you never really know what the year ahead may bring.

  20. You have to wash it after using it otherwise your salty sweat just sits there and corrodes it. I got it replaced under warranty and have been religiously rinsing it out ever since.
  21. Stolen: WHY Supple 7 2020 When: 8 December 2019 Where: Grabouw, Western Cape A friends BRAND NEW bike was stolen from where he was staying in Grabouw. They broke into the cottage and cleaned out all of his stuff including his new bike. It's literally only a week old. I'm fairly confident that its the only one in the country so should stand out. It definitely catches your attention when you see it. It has obviously been reported, but I don't have the case number on hand - can get it if required.
