  1. have a look at some road bikes.... ('no' electronics)

yes limited edition - but second hand components @ R330K

    https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/road-bikes/706935/colnago-c68-limited-edition

    has AXS... @ R260K

    https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/road-bikes/642688/new-cervelo-s5-custom-medium-54cm

we are humans - we will pay for what we think is valuable and those in marketing/sales will ask for what they think we can pay.  We just need to decide where we want to spend our rands, and hope that the rock/tarmac  recognises what I have spent and does not jump out and smash my very expensive piece of carbon

  2. I wonder if this thread is replicated in the Carhub / fishinghub / househub/ Padelhub ?  pushing innovation always is sold at a premium - Range Rover for 3.3 million - you can buy quite a few epic 8's for that or a pretty decent house - so the price really is irrelevant - either you can - or your can't - some can some can't. 27 million for a Camps Bay house - just a roof and a few walls - does nothing more than  1 million RDP house - but maybe wifi-automated electric lights? your either can or you can't.  As much as I can't afford and never will 27mill for a house, 3.3 for a car or 300 for a bike - such is life - appreciate the item for what it is - enjoy the trickle down effect  for your own price bracket and if you really want one - save for it , if not then I guess we can continue to fill up threads and complain on fishinghub as much as we want about the cost a Shimano Stella reel $1400 = ZAR23800 - it does not even catch the fish!  appreciate the beauty , innovation - stop hating your pet hate company and buy what you can afford/ want / like , and let those who can and want to pay for what they want - and when you see them - ask them how it rides!

  3. Picking up new helmet tomorrow! Sticking with specialised - did it's job

What is never known is how much better / worse off you would have been given your helmet quality. Decent is paramount, the rest is probably not testable.

The one other thing I learnt after going through concussion testing, was that when your brain takes a knock - it needs good time to recover, slowly back to work, get neck muscles seen to as whip lash is real and don't get your head bumped any time soon again - the rugby players who get knocked week in week out get into huge trouble - so rest well till all head symptoms better before risking a second bump (free doctor advice!)

I've had concussion. Three times. The first hit had me pass out while talking to the driver of the car that caused the crash. When I recovered consciousness he was gone. The second time, I was out again. I don't know how long. It could be 5 minutes. It could be 2 hours because I was alone at the time. my neurosurgeon told me I won't work again. The third time was earlier this year, and I knew immediately what was happening, except I was wearing a much better helmet this time around.

All I can add to this discussion is that concussions are not a joke. MIPS / Turbo is the bare minimum any helmet should have. Anything less than that adds tremendous risk to a serious brain injury.

last week had me suffering a bout of post concussion syndrome again, if anyone thinks that what I am saying isn't serious enough.

You have ONE head. Protect it!

it is quite sobering doing a concussion test... can't remember simple lists and standing on one leg with your eyes closed is somehow extremely difficult...    really "silly" and not super high speed crash - but without helmet would not be writing this - concussion not fun at all - but got off reasonably lightly. As others have said - not sure if 6k helmet better than  2K at keeping your head intact - but not the piece of equipment to skimp on

  5. Unlike many of our bike components and accessories, the bike helmet, apart from some aero advantage, should be a 'total waste of money'. Sitting on top of our head and doing nothing but sun protection until we get rid of it 3,5, 10 years later... then buy a new one and repeat.  Well an altercation with a concrete pole and in need of a new helmet - I am very happy I spent some money...  Thanks to the Freewheel Cycology team for dealing with my crash replacement - never knew that I would get a discounted replacement from Specialised - again not a perk of buying the helmet - until you need it!  Not that I ever ride without a helmet and have done that mat several hundreds of times - a spatchcock helmet is cause for reflection...

Hi DrRichard. Unfortunately the current trend by the retro/vintage gang is only to value bikes which have a complete groupset and not a mismatch of parts as was very common in the 70-80's. Selling the bike as it is you are likely to get between R2,500 to R3,000.

Stripping and selling off the parts you are likely to get far more than this. For example, that Dura Ace first gen crank (GA-200) is worth R1,500-R1,800. The Modolo brakeset in that condition about R1,000, Mavic FD R350-R400.

The frame and fork could get you R1,200 to R1,600.

    Trust this helps!

Thanks - value is in the eye of the beholder! and only he/she who wishes to buy it!

  7. have brought several- 21grams are really nice - not near the quality of a ciovita or first ascent for eg - same cloth throughout - but if are going for the design then worth it - if you want a quality shirt then go local. will pay import duty/ vat at post office, delivery variable - but usually not more than a few weeks.

  8. It is unfortunately becoming like a car service scenario - when you take your several hundred thousand rand car in for a service,- they walk around note every scratch and you sign for it.... my 1996 Golf at my local garage does not get a scratch check! but not worth even 50K,   not sure at what price point you need to start doing drop off service scratch checks with bicycles.....

  9. had a second hand epic ( rear brain) lovely and climbs like a dream - at nearly 50years old ( me not bike) was feeling abused on the rough downs so sold and bought a second hand camber ( Fox rear) and much more plush on the downs, and easier on the body for up and down Table mountain riding. not sure it climbs as well as my old epic. have not seen any second hand Epic Evo's ( camber replacement) for around 40K though.

  10. we had a few laughs when struggling up hill and an e- bike came flying past ... good for them...

what was unbelievable  was the person hitching a ride with an e-bike - no not drafting - actually holding on to the e-bike guys shirt and going down the M3... were not going to win anything or affect my prize money in 2D - but wow not sure what the point of that was...

What in the actual **** is going on. Just finished reading this and am totally speechless…

I truly feel for Doug and I know many know him personally (I do not) and in business many make mistakes. It’s for the reason the buyers from an oil rig who want to buy an S-Works having never seen it for a birthday gift, there are still many falling for that today. Many don’t understand cryptocurrency, but lots understand real currency, and if that real currency is not in the bank then it’s ghost currency.

    Painful lesson.

This is truly a most remarkable read and terrifying at best- reads like a Zondo commission report.

  12. We lost our law abiding nature a long time ago  I fear - but at least felt guilty( a little) when breaking the law- I saw several bike lights up at the Block house this morning  was dark on my way to work! But when you are doing something illegal, and get caught, and then abuse the person who is responsible for policing the law - then we have sunk to an evened lower low

  13. Hi all

trying to find information about riding on the front of Table Mountain again - I know the burnt area was closed after the fire. Is there any info of whether we are free to ride - any areas to avoid because of fire damage? I saw pics of blockhouse single track bridge burnt -still safe?

  14. If anyone has an old pair of crank brother cleats, I would highly appreciate it, I want to try a set of eggbeater peddles out but don’t want to pay R500 incase I don’t like them. Will be willing to pay for a secondhand set though.

where are you based? have a few old sets lying around

  15. my 11 year old is on a 24-9r - has given him confidence with the bigger tyres and small frame - if you want to do decals - you can get custom stickers printed on Vinyl - or you can use water transfer stickers - actually very easy and adds to the uniqueness - just watch out for the black as the colours get a bit lost, print with inkjet and word/powerpoint etc, and clear lacquer over -

can sort you out with a sheet of paper of transfer paper if you need
