"These are of course the Easter Island Statues or as they are properly called Moai.

Then after doing some research, found out that researchers have actually known about the bodies underneath the soil since the first excavation was done in 1914. More than 900 Moai were carved and erected.

Anyway, still amazing feat of rock carving done somewhere between 1250 and 1500 AD, and then lifting these HUGE slabs of rock into place. What you need to remember is that the weren't originally buried, this just happened over time as soil was washed down around them from the mountains in the background.

One theory is that for the erection of these huge statues, the population cut down every single tree on the island. You can apparently see the post holes in the excavations where wood was used to erect the stones. This had a huge impact on the ecology of the island, and eventually decimated the population by he time the island was first visited by Europeans in 1722."
