Hey guys,

Quick question. We will be moving soon, pretty long drive from PE to Pretoria(1100km)

We will be stopping often, even a sleep over in Bloem to make 2 smaller trips. Our 2 Bassets are cool, will most likely sleep all the way. The cat is an issue though. He does settle down after a little driving. We bought a harness so that we can take him out of the car at stops to eat, pee, etc but he refuses to walk or even function with it on.

It's quite funny but also concerning, when he has the harness on he stands with a bowed back, pulls to the left and just doesn't want to walk. Flops over and just lies there.

Any advice?

Flying, because of the costs, is not an option.

Drugs would be a last resort.

Drove my kitten from JNB to CPT. Rescue remedy helped. - a few drops directly in the mouth. And let him spend time in the harness, while u are around to monitor him so he doesn't get hooked on stuff. Eventually he will get used to the feel of it. Don't even try and leash him just let him figure stuff out for himself - he will at some stage have to walk to his food bowl....

Please help with some advice. My lab ( Sasha ) suffers from an ailment referred to as Spirocerca Lupi . After receiving very expensive medication , X-rays , Vets fees , etc . she is still very ill and fading away. She hardly eats , vomits a lot of slime with traces of blood. The Vet recons there is no more he can do for her. It troubles me deeply to make a decision to rid this beautiful loving animal of her life. Whenever I thinks it is time to take this dreadfull decision , she wags her tail as if to say , " thank you for letting me live ". I am not keeping her alive for my own benefit and I don't want her to suffer. The Vet is of the opinion that posible cancer treatment could extend her live somewhat , but the quality could be questionable.

Ah lump in the throat stuff and tears down my cheeks.

No dos and donts for you just the words my vet gave me when it was time:

Dogs can be so stoic in their suffering -it's almost like they don't want you to know in how much discomfort or pain they really are in because they feel it's their duty to look after you and they don't want to fail in that duty by seeming weak. And they will hold on as long as they think U want them too cos they just want to make happy...

Sometimes you have to be the strong one...

Good luck xxx

Mate

There no easy way around this.

Do whats best for the dog.

I recently lost my favourite Rottweiler Rocky..it was shyte i cried for a few days and everytime i see a video of him i still get tears in my eyes.

Do whats best for him..make sure if he has pain that you make the right call.

Let the vet come to you place and do it there..be there for him till he passes away.

Dont give him any heavy anti inflammatory medicine..normally at this stage it does more harm then good.

My old man Rocky was still wagging his tail till the second last day..it doesn't mean hes fine..he is just happy to know you there for him

All the best buddypost-25947-1436462684,837.jpg

We do the same trip every dec.

Same dogs as you & two cats as well. My honest advice is just to get it over & done with - dont stop overnight. Trip wont take you more than 11 hours with stops.

Cats can sleep for 11 hours a day no problem. Mine will not drink or eat the entire trip. The dogs will have some water if we're lucky at one of the stops - otherwise they just sleep & cuddle up to eat other (dogs & cats - one big pile of fur).

Put a litter tray in the car where the cat can find it if he needs to, but I wouldnt upset him by trying to make him get out of the car.

Its really not a big deal. The cats sometimes like to sleep between us on the handbrake with a coat or something. They like the AC.

Once you're out on the open road the cat will calm down & go to sleep.

Good luck with the move.

Doing what is best for my best friend is really my dilemma. The Vet is not very helpful , although he is very sympathetic. He feels that I know my buddy best , and should respond accordingly. Thanks for the replies. Odd that sharing my problem with Hubbers " helps" , albeit that sympathy was not the objective.

The whippet thingie caught Ghost's eye. The Chopper caught mine. Ghost's become a pleasure to take to the market. When I first got him, he wasn't too keen on the leash, now he's a market whore. Knows that if he behaves the stallholders spoil him. :whistling:

If it's still available at Uncle Tim's Antique Fair next month, I'll get it for you...

Talking of which, there's an animal fair at the same venue at the end of next month. At least that's what the woman who sold me the Kama Sutra carving yesterday told me.
