Nedbank Announces Termination of Team 360Life Sponsorship

http://www.bicycling.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/joberg2c8.jpgFileNedbank has decided to terminate its sponsorship of Team 360Life. In making this announcement, Nedbank is by no means withdrawing from cycling in South Africa but has rather decided to continue efforts and investment into other aspects of the sport, particularly youth development and events which benefit our clients, staff and communities.

Nedbank currently has a significant involvement in cycling in South Africa, which includes a variety of developmental cycling initiatives as well as participating in a wide range of events, including Nedbank Tour de Tuli, Sani2C and the Cycle Tour. There will be no change to our level of support of these events.

Nedbank’s decision was made all the more difficult given the immediate impact it has on riders Kevin Evans and James Reid who have represented Team 360Life and their sport commendably. This decision is in no way a reflection on either rider, but purely a consequence of recent events. Nedbank will continue to remunerate Kevin and James to the end of their contract periods, to ensure that they are not financially impacted by this decision.

Kevin Evans said in a statement

“It is sad to part ways with Nedbank who have been such faithful and fantastic sponsors and have offered so much support to my career and to the sport of cycling, including nurturing young world class talent. I realise how hard this decision has been for Nedbank but will continue to support them in their contribution to the development of cycling as well as their participation in a number of events in the cycling calendar.”

We wish Kevin and James the very best for the future and take this opportunity to also thank those who supported Team 360Life.

David George is no longer contracted with Nedbank following the release of his press statement and Nedbank will donate the balance of his contractual earnings to the South African Institute of Drug-Free Sport.

From this statement, things I find positive:

  • Evans and James will still earn a salary to the end of their contract
  • Nedbank will still support cycling
  • The earning from DG will go to drug free sport

Negative

  • Evans and James are out in the cold at a time when I am sure sponsorship's are hard to come b

Very disappointing! cursing.gif

Interesting that they went through the charade of asking the public's opinion on Twitter (with the bulk of responses asking them not to drop the sponsorship) and still went ahead

If I had a Nedbank account I would have closed it now in protest... whistling.gif

Could not have been an easy decision, but I guess they want to send the same message, as did Barloworld......if 1 team mates dopes....then Asta la Vista baby...were are out ta here.....

Very sad, but I am sure it was the reality and conditions when they signed them up.....well done King George!!

Its very disappointing for KE and his fans and I really do feel for him, but I think it's good for the sport as a whole. For the first time ever in any sport it is becoming seriously "uncool" to dope, and the message is now clear that doping will f&^k up your career big time. I think this is a huge step towards cleaning up the sport completely!

Does Kevin have a new team yet?

Would be cool if someone like spesialized picks him up. At least he will get more international exposure. I guess these teams are maybe more into contracting XC racers though

In the end probably the right decision. It is all about brand equity - the market they try to reach is the mass of riders in it for the fun. The heroes are tainted, so rather put the money directly into where your market is, and most of the market is really sceptical about the heroes. Would have been exactly my strategy. I think KE statement also indicates that there may be more behind this than we see, as it is very neutral, no real condemnation of DG - maybe he could not make a stronger statement - definitely not strong enough for Nedbank to stand behind him.
