Had a few roadies join us for a mtb ride this morning. Have to ask yourself if it`s worth it risking your life for your sport. I`ve been cycling since 1990. In 1999 I gave up road riding because of danger. But I still enjoy mtb more than ever.

I rode a group ride this morning and I've never experienced so much respect and vigilance from motorists as I did today. It seems that the Burry tragedy and the exposure it received may have brought some much needed attention to cyclists. Whether it lasts is a whole different story sadly.

I had two of my hardest rides since the news.

Feeling inspired to ride for those that 'cannot' anymore.

The day before Tinkerbell died last October she said to me "ride your bike because you can!". Was repeated at her memorial service. I'm sure Burry would've had said the same thing if he had the chance to. My heart aches when I think of Burry as it reminds me of Tinkerbell and my late brother, whom I lost in a car accident on the South Coast in 1989. Burry will become an even bigger legend in the mold of James Dean, and I will try and ride my bike even more (although probably all on dirt).

Cape Town - South African Dakar Rally star, Giniel de Villiers, will drive this year's race in memory of compatriot Burry Stander who was tragically killed after being hit by a minibus taxi on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast on Thursday.

VIDEO: Dakar Rally 2013 preview

De Villiers, 40, who won the car section of the Dakar Rally in 2009, posted a picture of his Toyota on Twitter on Friday, with an image of Stander clearly visible taped to his car.

De Villiers tweeted: This is in memory of Burry Stander who will be riding with us in the Dakar this year. One of SA 's greatest sportsman.

The 2013 Dakar Rally starts in Peru on Saturday.

Did the hardest training ride I've ever done today. 153kms with over 2500m of climb. Thought of Burry all of the way, wore a shirt with a message to him over my kit showing motorists I was riding in his honour. When I reached the 120 mark I was contemplating taking an escape route to dodge the last climbs and ended up cycling next to an elderly gent wearing a Songo top. Turns out he was hit by a delivery van 3 months ago, breaking his pelvis, 2 ribs and 2 vertebrae. He admits he is back on the bike too soon, but could not resist riding, especially since the tragic loss of Burry. Rode over Chappies and Suikerbossie with him before tackling the final piece with renewed purpose!

Tomorrow is promised to no one! Live each day as if it was your last and you will know happiness. See you out on the roads and in the dirt!

What she said.

Whilst Burry's death is sad, and my sympathy is with his family, it in no way affects my love of the sport and my love of riding my bike. The risk to me in my car, on my motorbike, on my bicycle is the same today as it was before his passing.

I ride.

Very apprehensive to get on the road bike to be honest. Considered selling it.

One the one hand I don't want this to take away my freedom and enjoyment of riding, though I really just use the road bike to train for mtb riding, I still enjoy riding it. But on the other I'd rather keep riding mtb and leave the road than doing no riding at all.

I saw on twitter another gal was hit in PTA as well, in hospital apparently. Hope she pulls through!

Was supposed to do a 100km road ride today but could not get on the bike. I just cannot get the idea of my wife being a widow soon out of my head. Its ridiculous, I know.

Tomorrow I will get on the MTB. Do 90 odd km and see what happens but I don’t know when I will get back on the road bike. My training buddy and I decided to not ride on the road just the two of us again. It’s not worth the risk. We are now trying to find a club that does 100km road rides at a not to slow speed. That is the only way I can see myself on the road bike again.

I know one should keep on riding; I am just to freaking scared at the moment
