Why is a saddle called a saddle, but a seat post isn't called a saddle post?

So I almost got my head ripped off by some cycling nut when I asked to see his shops range of road seats. Hence the question.

 

Anyone with an intelligent answer? Smart ass answers are welcome too.

Maybe the part your bum sits on is a saddle...but when coupled with a seat post the whole thing is collectively referred to as a seat?

 

Kinda like in a car...there is no part called "car". That is the term for the collective finished product.

Just like jockeys became derailleurs and flywheels became cranks, so seats became saddles.

Seats are supposed to be comfortable. Saddles by definition imply a bumpy ride and some bruising.
