So may I pee in the veld? Fortunately I've never had to poo in the veld...

I ran the Soweto Marathon last year and needed my usual pre-race bog visit. Luckily it was the light version. However, when hopping off into the veld I noticed that more than 50 runners were squatting in the veld next to the start, each with a roll of bog paper, having a cr~p.

The smell was vile, never mind the fact that one needed to watch their step very carefully. Never had that problem at a bike race, at least there are porta potties at those.

I personally feel that you should throw nothing on the ground when you are out riding, why leave something foreign lying around for others to look at when you can just take it home. If you must eat a banana, just stick the peel under a rock

WHAT!!!! you mean stop look for a rock to put it under. What about my Strava section?

I do agree there is no need to chuck anything into the bush, if you brought it you sure as hell and take it back with you.

just found this article - apparently they are biodegradable but it takes 2 years.

http://www.guardian....ntains-scotland

Most sources claim a much lower number:

Paper Towel - 2-4 weeks

Banana Peel - 3-4 weeks

Paper Bag - 1 month

Newspaper - 1.5 months

Apple Core - 2 months

Cardboard - 2 months

Cotton Glove - 3 months

Orange peels - 6 months

Plywood - 1-3 years

Wool Sock - 1-5 years

Milk Cartons - 5 years

Cigarette Butts - 10-12 years

Leather shoes - 25-40 years

Tinned Steel Can - 50 years

Foamed Plastic Cups - 50 years

Rubber-Boot Sole - 50-80 years

Plastic containers - 50-80 years

Aluminum Can - 200-500 years

Plastic Bottles - 450 years

Disposable Diapers - 550 years

Monofilament Fishing Line - 600 years

Plastic Bags - 200-1000 years

I plan to do my own experiment by chucking a Banana peel in my garden tonight.

don't know how much of this I willl believe...

it says that plastic containers (like a laundry bin) will last 50 - 80 years... A plastic bottle that has a thinner wall thickness and made of the same material will last 450 years and a plastic bag with a paperthin wall will last up to 1000 years. I'll bet my socks and shoes on this cold morning that they've got it wrong way round...

seems like some thumb suckin was done here

The article doesnt say this, it quotes somebody else as saying it, and doesnt comment on whether it is true or not - though the tone is mocking.

I'll continue to chuck banana skins because my common sense tells me they degrade quickly. Will stop chucking if this turns out to be wrong.

Thats funny. Clearly you never been to the army before :) your shovel and a roll of loo paper is ur best friend always

Banana peels go black in a day or so and then break down. I chuck them in the veld, but off the trail.

Orange/naartjie peels are a different story, they are unsightly.

Let's pick the "low hanging fruit" first and get "bicycle riders" to stop chucking their goo sachets, at this stage the banana peel debate is academic. Surely?

+1 Most of us would probably not notice 10 Banana Peels lying in a bush but I for one would notice empty 10 GU packs.

What will do more damage, an animal ingesting a banana peel (unlikely as they will smell it and move on) or a GU sachet (much more likely as the residual smell and taste will stay on the packet for days)

Interesting 4th Grade experiment regarding Banana vs apple:
