My breeding years are over so before I get put out to graze I just wanted to give this a bash.... but thanks for the valuable advice loser.

To the seriousness of the matter at hand.

Good that you bond is paid, your car is paid and you have adopted a black son-in-law.

I totally disagree with going full taps as some have suggested here.

I will give the same advice I gave NSBB.

Go out relaxed, carefully and with care.

Ride well within yourself (the few minutes lost can be made up over the rest of the week)

The last thing you want is to go through all that training, pay the money to get there and break an arm or something on the first day.

I wish you all the best in your challenge.

my ADVICE FINISH THE RACE WHAT EVER IT TAKES,,,,,,AS THE SAYING GOES SLOWLY SLOWLY CATCH A MONKEY,,,rush him he gets away

+1

But I am sure you want to feel good after the Prologue as you know what lies ahead for the rest of the race

It is a worry for me as my partner is European and I don't know how he will handle the heat or terrain..

Make him/her pay 2/3 of the entry cost - just as a little extra incentive. ;)

hitting it hard first day = 1 day glory and a life time disappointment cause you possibly burnt too many matches and you didn't finish, start slow and try play catch up

Or take more matches

We opted to take it easy in the prologue as to 'save some' for the rest of the race. But afterwards we regretted not going harder. If your preparation in the 6 months up to the epic is spot on, you'll get stronger as the race progresses, going hard in the prologue wont affect the following stages. It's only 25 to 30 odd km's (and shouldn't take longer than 2 hours assuming you have no crashes or technicals), which is nothing in the greater scheme of things.

Don't look at it as a prologue rather look at it as a short first stage, a 27 mtb ride is a good outing in most peoples book. It not like a 7 km tour de france prologue that the pros crack out in 7 minutes flat, you are going to be out there for 1:30 to 2:00. Flat out wont work, ride it below lactate threshold and you will be thankful the next day when you start with good legs. Remember the Epic approach is to have a large chunk of the field eliminated in the first two or three full stages.
