If you want to go fast, get a red bike...

 

On a more serious note, cycle with friends who have better ability and you will push yourself more quickly and you can follow their routes and lines. Better fitness will help in controlling the bike as is usually when you are tired you fall more.

Ride LOTs. Start small, gradually build up your base miles.

 

Fix what you can yourself.

Try riding with someone better or fitter than you. Riding with a more experienced rider can increase your effort on the bike by 200%. Good luck!
