They also do great chocolate brownies .... when I walk in there the lady behind the counter hand picks me one before I reach the counter

I think I am going to add you to my "ignore list"…actually I don't know how to add people to that.

You can buy an awesome bike or a crappy car for the same money.

For eg, my BMC Fourstroke is worth quite a bit, but for the same money that I can buy a new bike I will buy a bland second hand car with a lot of km's on it. And I reckon my bike compares to a Hilux doublecab in the awesome scale. And that will cost ten times what my bike costs new.

So my suggestion is (and my MO,) buy secondhand. In cars, and bikes.

Let someone else takes the knock in value.

Yes, cycling is expensive. Very. but you don't have to splash out and buy expensive equipment. My singlespeed was built using hand me downs and old parts from mates. But it is as much fun to ride as my fancy bike.

And while people belive that you need the latest superduper delux 29er to ride Epic, it has been done on 26 hardtails with v-brakes.

Want and need are two very different things.

Price for bikes and parts are not that bad actually. Check out Kite boarding... a Kite will set you back about 10k and 7k for a decent board.

Also.

Check out how much people drop on one night of boozing.

Rather spend that money on bikes I say. :D

And check the classifieds a month later, same board and kite for 75% less than the new price

There is a big difference between have to and want to.

I have to fork out (at a bargain price) 800 ZAR's per tyre for my car and I almost **** myself but I do it because I have to.

I want to get new tyres for my mtb, even if i must pay R800, I will do so with a smile because I want to!!

So rather than b!tching and moaning over the high prices of cycling stuff in general, the solution is simple: if you cant face the heat stay out of the kitchen....easy as that

So after all this bantering and my pointless chocolate comments, it has to be recognised that decent equipment prices are simply getting more and more expensive very quickly.

Thankfully more entry level components like Deore or SLX are getting rather good and allows one on a budget to also "get into" the sport with a reasonable quality component.

Somewhere along the line the prices will simply be completely out of hand and the goods simply will not sell.

In closing, you do not need to spend a fortune on a bike nowadays to get a good handling and very competent bicycle. It might not be the gloss magazine cover bike, but it sure would be a bike that will make you a happy rider.

None of my bikes, bought new, cost more than R20 000 and they have decent components 10spd Dura, XT, etc.

Impossible to find anything even 2nd hand near that car wise.

Dude, what planet are you from?

The WHOLE AIM OF CYCLING is to OWN A BIKE THAT IS WORTH MORE THAN YOUR CAR!

(Check, my tounge is in my cheek.)

True. My theory is that (even though I agree gear is ridiculously expensive) what drives the cost up most is the drive to have new, better, lighter, smarter, stiffer AND with a new "standard" every year.

A repaint and some spec change is one thing, but the fact that most of the industry chucks out all their molds and restart EVERY model year is what's making this giant snowball unstoppable. If more manufacturers operated like Santa Cruz, Turner, Yeti, Ibis and the likes we'd have a happier medium. But Specialized HAS to cover all R&D costs of their model year in that year - no chance of recouping their investment over three years. That leads to more staff and higher costs.

All this for (mostly) incremental improvements which 80% of folk (including you know who over on the flex-fred  ) can't feel.
