So the Ethekwini municipality have already done some great work trying to get bike lanes into the city area, the boardwalk and paved some new bikes paths along the Umgeni river.

Now they have handed bicycles over to their exco team, and intend to dish out bikes to municipality staff to be deployed as 'pool vehicles'.

They really are encouraging people to get on their bikes, and they're starting with themselves.

It's a pleasure to see something good being done by politicians. Props to you and your team, Mayor James Nxumalo :).

Article here.

I give it 2 weeks and those bikes will be gathering dust in a basement somewhere.

Fair enough, esp. considering the sizable bulk of many of our esteemed bureaucrats.

But the fact that they're actively trying to push DBN towards being a bicycle-friendly city, and driving their own staff to be part of that change... well, that's more than just a gesture.

Agree, wish we could see something like this in PTA.

100 cement - I'm just being cynical. Having lived in DBN all my life, and seeing it's demise, my faith in it evolving into a first world city is at an all time low.

I see the cycle lanes progressing though - the section along the esplanade up towards Wilsons Wharf is well under way.

Here's secretly hoping the Mayor sets an example that many will follow.

Would like to see James Brown on the left and his sidekick next to him, dressed in the curtain, spinning to work.... It's one thing to have your picture taken next to a bike with a smile and a thumbs up but another to don the clips (or should that be flats) and actually get your leg over the crossbar....

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it. I can think of nothing better than taking my family down to the beachfront on a Sunday arvie and being able to ride from the stadium down to Wilson's wharf for a juice and then back again in a safe environment. Just echo Skott's sentiments regarding the dusty basement scenario.

Cudos to them, but they are only following the example set by our own "Iron Lady", Antie Helen and her team. :whistling:

Some of them have actually participated in the Argus, and is committed commuters.
