Hi all

Just wondering. When looking at the classifieds everyday, I'm just wondering what should the cost of as second hand bike be? Should it be 80%, 70% or 50% of a new one? I think that most of the sellers are asking too much. Second hand is second hand! If I have to spend 20k on a hobby/sport, I will buy a new bike and will definitely not pay 19k for a second hand one. What do you guys think? Is it fair to say that a bike loses at least 25% of it's value per year.?

depends on many variables ...same as cars some cars have better resale value some are rubbish, condition etc etc all plays a role I don't think you can put and absolute percentage on it there are just to many variables...but generally speaking yes once it is second hand it should lose X amount of value as soon as it leaves the showroom floor regardless of it being ridden or not??

but seriously, it's an open market with willing buyer, willing seller. bikes go for what they're worth. i think a bike loses 20% of it's value as it goes from new to used, you just don't know what has happened to it inbewteen and that's the margin.

Thank's Sunshine! Thought so myself. How many 1 year old bikes are being sold at 40% below the new price? I think it is few and far between. No wonder most sellers don't even get a comment.

I dont know hey...if I can get a 2011, 2012 or 2013 S-works Epic for R19 000, i'd be pretty stoked, especially if in good condition.

Cant agree

Everything I have advertised has been sold at a mutually agreeable price

Same with my son

Set a price...get an offer....counter offer accept hey presto

Agree, willing buyer, willing seller... One of those things that you don't have to sell to buy a new ones and i'd guess that those for sale are from people who already have a new one, so they selling their spare and sometimes it is nice to have a spare so if they don't sell it is not the end of the world. With more and more bikes around the prices should come down slowly

i bought a bike off the hub that had 1400km mileage at 56% of the original cost......just got to keep your eyes open

edit...and learn to bargain a bit

Despite what you saying OP, there are bikes/bike deals on the Hub that is priced far below actual valve. It depends at what you looking for...entry level vs mid/top range.

What a lot of guys don't realise that their 1 year old bikes are actually selling new for less than they paid because the bike shops are discounting them in anticipation of the new models.

An example is a 2013 Specialized SL4 Pro frame that was advertised a few days ago. The seller wants R16 000 for it, which is fair considering the recommended selling price is R23 000. Unfortunately, these are on special at some bike shops for R15 000 or so.
