So far it has always just been nr.1

2. Mechanical ...........never really had a mechanical before (not even a flat). Had my back brakes just locking out even if I only pull the lever slightly, but I still went to go do the DH section.

You train and prepare for an Event.

Entries are pre paid.

But for some reason you pull out at the last minute.

When do you draw the Line?

1. Medical

2. Mechanical

3. Wife/ Husband

4. Weather

1800 entries were received with costs ranging from r180 to r300 per entry,

But 500 people did not Show Up today!

What is your opinion?

There have been quite a few "races" and rides which I've not pitched to because I didn't feel like:

1) Trashing a chain/cassette in mud

2) Being blown around

3) Freezing

4) Not having fun

I've ridden enough (and plan to still ride a LOT more) during my life to not put up with an unpleasant ride. The Rxxx entry fee forfeited is the least of my worries when the "will it be enjoyable?" question comes up.

All of the above +

1) Dont feel like riding today.

2) Too much red wine last night.

3) seemed like a good idea at the time.

Bearings.....njom njom njom.

My only DNS was at last year's race at van gaalens...not the nissan one, another. It was pouring at the start. Myself, typhoon and swift01 took one look at the rain and went to the beer tent for a 7AM hair of the dog.

cradle quest! i started and finished it, thats the race that cost me R1500.... havent started in the rain since.

Did SSSC this year with the worst hangover known to man, we got to bed at about 5AM after a crazy party involving a midget playing thunderstruck at the local pub....no jokes. Who knew hilton had such a pumping nightlife.

1 bottle of epic pro, 1 boerewors roll, 2 x painkillers and another beer....let's race

Yes that was the one....there were like 30 people starting it. Bigup for completing it, apparently it was crazy out there

I was one of those 500 not starting. Mine was purely medical.

Got ill and decided last weekend already I'm not in a condition to ride. Couple of weeks' hayfever (since before K2C) turned sour, sinus infections, so cortizone injection, etc. Rode midweek and HR did funny things on top of generally feeling like crap. Having had a torrid Burger MTB and weird HR's 3 weeks after having been ill, I decided not to ride. Went for a lekker jol on Welvanpas rather - at my own pace.

And also - a serious mudfest also counts as a reason for a DNS for me.

Also consider not all of the entrants are skilled bunch riders and with the conditions would not have survived the day or pissed a lot of people off.

Personally I have a triathlon next weekend and after running a half marathon last weekend I thought better of it in the conditions on the day. That being said I had pretty much planned to not race before the weather.

It would have cost me R180 to drive out there - so I could also look at it as R180 saved - excluding the extra's like food and drink, bars, gels et al

That is a VERY VALID reason.

I cycle for the fun and because I enjoy it.

Riding in that wind yesterday was not going to fun by any stretch of imagination, so I stayed at home and in bed with my wife. Got up at a civilised hour, went to Church and then to a relaxed lunch. Now that was a lot more fun than suffering into a howling wind for kilometers on end.

Must say I'm a bit of a hardegat when it comes to race entries and pulling out at the last minute. Ultimately it is also a training ride and as such:

wind = a hard ride = a bit of extra training

rain and storms = a hard uncomfortable ride = a bit of extra mental prep for that curveball 94.7 on a wet Gauteng morning

mechanical = DIY and an uncertain and cautious ride = a bit of technical prep for that one bad bad day on the bike

And medical? Well ja, I just spent two frustrating weeks off the bike missing the Amashovha and Satellite Classic (two races that I immensely looked forward to racing) after an infection...still, there should be no compromise to one's health.

Regarding the One Tonner yesterday - I don't think 160km in stormy winds is something the average weekend warrior can just wing on the day if he/she is not properly trained - not without some serious suffering at least. So I don't blame anybody for not pitching (and Rule #9 for those who did!!)

On my way back from Stellenbosch to Durbanville (riding my car not my bike like F.R.A.I.L(!)), I saw a number of riders sitting and lying down next to the road, obviously knackered. So well done to everybody that finished!

I did not pitch because I've been sick and haven't trained in the last 3 weeks. I tried to substitute my entry for the 1 tonner but PPA would not allow me to do that.

If subs were allowed, I think a lot more people would've showed up.
