First Offence, 4 Years

I know the news is a couple of days old already, but damn.

For those who dont know, in Cape Town there is a World Conference on Doping in Sport.

USADA chief executive Travis Tygart amongst others are pushing to extend the two year ban to four years. This will only be for first offenses though.

"We're comfortable with the four years on a first offense," Tygart said. "Obviously trafficking, distribution, cover-up can be a higher level of offense and we think that's appropriate, particularly for athlete support personnel, coaches, doctors, team owners that are complicit in a conspiracy."

Is it just me that wants to buy Tygard a Whole bottle of Bells or what?

Wish our government would implement this philosophy.

certainly for the serious stuff like EPO, blood transfusions, but for the little stuff that often enters the system through supplements or funny things like diuretics it might be a little harsh.....unless its can be proved the funny thing is being used as a masking agent.

Yes,steroids,EPO and anything else where needles are involved.

Over the counter stuff could be a accident.

People seem to be a bit extreme on their opinions on this. Deliberate actions by professionals or people invoved with making money from the sport should result in harsh punishment, stoopid behavior should be harsh as well but 4 yrs for an amateur in E batch is a little silly.

Death by firing squad should solve the problem!!

Does seem a bit excessive...

Isn't it in Joburg?

"The changes to the World Anti-Doping Code, which first came into effect in 2003, should be ratified at this week’s World Conference on Doping in Sport in Johannesburg, and will be effective as of January 1st 2015."

You can’t make doping a black and white scenario.

There is incentive to be in the grey area, and it’s an arms race so the goalpost is always shifting.

Is that the logic USADA applied in giving everyone else involved a six month slap on the wrist and giving Lance a life ban?

Where I grew up, we used to call that ***** psychology.

No, I think the logic they used ran along the lines of, come forward and tell us the truth and we will be lenient; an offer made to all involved in US Postal.

Some said, "OK, we are bust, here is our story" they got 6 months.

Some said " F@ck you ! Stop libeling me. I am well connected and will sue the hell out of you ! I am the most tested athlete in the history of the universe, you have nothing on me, so f@ck off ! " they got lifetime bans.

Seems fair to me

6 months? Fair? For years of cheating? Doesn't seem fair to me. (and, whether you believe him or not, according to Lance, he was never offered any such deal.)

I mean, if they are now discussing 4 years for a first time offence, and under the existing rules, there is a two year sanction, why didn't the guys get their two years? Why did Lance get life? makes no sense.
