On Sunday 17 November 2013 I road the 94.7 cycle challenge. My chain broke and I required a new chain pin. All my links were still intact, but main chain pin went missing. I stopped at the service station on Bompas where Kyalami pro cycles had a stand. They charged me R40 for a chain pin. I had to take two in case it broke again so I paid R80 for two chain pins. I put the pin in myself. The woman that was working there was running around collecting money. It felt like they were there to make money and not help the cyclists. I am great full for their assistance but think that on big events like this one the organizers should select the assisting stands more carefully.

When I read the title I thought this would be about some blonde who pinched your backside or shoved her hands down your pants. But then I guess that's just me.

Companies are out there to help themselves before they help you. Prices at events are generally more expensive, because of the immediate need. So yes, we get taken advantage of, and theres really nothing we can do about it.

This is evident in every single industry out there.

Phoned the organizers. They couldn't give me an answer yet but it sounds to me like they get companies to sponsor support. Does anyone know? If this is the case that means they don't pay for the stand. So from being a company that supports the 94.7 challenge they become a lucrative business for the day. Sure make a buck on the day but don't put a markup of 300% - 400% on your products. Would like to know how much they charged for a tube. I don't know if all the service stations overcharge to such an extent but if they do instead of warning us against the hot African sun they should warn us against the highly lucrative business on the side that want your money!

They may not pay for the stand but I'm pretty sure they don't pay their staff with "please" and "thank yous"

I agree with Mudda, consider yourself F****g lucky! R40 sounds like a bargain vs the entry fee you just paid and not finishing.

My dad broke his chain along the route. I reckon he'd gladly have paid double that price to keep going. People stopped and tried to help him, but to avail, he finished in the broom wagon.

Well now you know...good luck carrying all your spares next year. That will show them money grabbing mech support stations. :whistling:

Surely a pin/quick link/tube/pump/co2/multitool should be part of your normal riding kit anyway?

I saw a guy having to be helped by one of the roving motorbike mechanics to replace a tube!

3 pages of this ..... for R40.

Sorry R24

To put it in to context because of this he missed out on an ice cold beer and R4 change that he could of used to tip the car guard.

A business can charge what they want for a service. The OP accepted the price by paying for it. It does sound a bit high to me, but eyebrows get raised regularly in this business.

but if it really is a 'MARKETING' exercise running a temporary service stall for the day, then these guys have now put their goodwill in turbo reverse by overcharging.

edit: the thread title needs some violin music.

Well true context would dictate he considered people who flew and drove from all parts of the country to participate - was petrol or a flight expensive - for sure. Are there threads about the 'extra' costs to do the race ... no
