Eina! Great story to share... Sad thing is, you'll still see idiots riding without them... Claims of "doesn't protect anything" spewing from their mouths...

Heal up quick man... And don't forget... Chucks dig scars.

.......we should have a competition to see who has the longest (combined) length of scars

I also had a freak accident in August, and hit the ground head first at about 40 km/h...saved by my Giro. I just cannot comprehend people riding without helmets, no matter how short or basic your ride might be.......you just never know when it might be your turn to take a tumble.

My father is alive simply because he wore a fairly basic dorky helmet when a driver didn't see him and pulled out from a side road into his way while he was going downhill at about 50 km/h. He went into the side of the car and had multiple fractures and facial injuries, but NO head injury. Afterwards I picked up his helmet that was literally split into 2 pieces, kept together by the straps and found car tyre tread on one side of the helmet, leading us to conclude that the car somehow drove OVER his head after the first impact. He has no recollection of the crash at all. His rehab took about 2 years, and he made his comeback by riding the Argus again at age 70 with myself and my 2 sons. I gave him the best, coolest helmet I could afford for his 70th birthday. He's done 5 ("only one more") since then and is already training for next year. Needless to say, we all wear helmets, no exceptions!

This is a bit off topic, but I am in the market for a new helmet.

I have been riding with a R500 Met helmet, which I love.

Is there really a difference in quality between a R500 and R1000 and R3500 helmet???

Which helmets would you recommend for bout a R1000 bucs

I can attest to the fact that there must be quite a number of cyclists who owe their lives to wearing a good helmet. A few years back I also had a nasty accident in a funride. The rider in front of the bunch hit an oil patch and went down. As we were heading downwind at the time, the speed was high and a number of us were involved in the crash. I ended up with a deflated lung, 5 broken ribs and concussion. At the hospital I was told that my helmet saved me from more severe head injuries.

I still observe some 'macho' riders out on the road without a helmet. Tried to talk one and was told to f... off.

Some people spend huge amounts of money on components and not the same on a good helmet.

Keep safe guys.

Thanks for posting this. Sorry to hear about the accident; just goes to show how easily s**t happens, hey? I am happy to see that you were not more seriously injured. That helmet sure took a hit(Wife and I have the same helmets; I'm pondering now whether they are adequate or not).

You are now one of few men who have cleavage on the head, as opposed to just boobs on the brain, like the rest of us.

:D

I hope you heal up quick and clean

This is probably one of the longest running arguments still going around on the hub, it deserves its own special thread title.

Glad your ok Mr Roadie no more and well done to the chaps that helped you

If Chuck digs You, resistance is futile anyway...

Hi Hollowman,

Now been able to see the cross section of the helmet, the plastic is super thin and I at first also thought maybe the helmet was inadequate and I should be ranting how crap it is but then I doubt they test and design the helmets for sharp objects.

My replacement helmet will certainly be a top of the range one though as I now have first hand experience as to how critical they are.
