I must say its mind blowing just how easy and how litlle effort it is to keep going once set up. The idea of throwing water away into soil just doesnt make sense any more.

I agree. If I have a house with a pool oneday I want to convert the pool into a pond and the flowerbeds to growbreds.

Any recommendation for a good tree (or trees) to plant in our garden? We live in Centurion. We have a lemon tree that's doing pretty well and have just planted a bunch of chilli seedlings.

I'm not a very active gardener, so I'm looking at things to plant that we can use in the kitchen but won't demand a lot of maintenance.

Was looking at something like a pistachio tree, but not sure if it's the right climate (or where to get one). Friend had a pecan nut tree, but apparently they take a thousand years to grow and get as big as the Drakensberg.

Any suggestions? What do you grow that's not a vegetable?

My folks have a lemon, lime, plum, peach and a nut of some sort. The nut tree gets babied and hasn't produced anything(yet) worth bragging about. The plum and peach trees are a waste IMHO as the birds get to all the fruit way before we can. When the trees were small we used to cover them with nets but some birds still got in, especially the small mouse birds. Now the trees are much bigger we don't even bother checking if the birds may have missed any fruit. Even when the fruit is still green the birds are already chowing them. The lemon and lime produce so much that they end up giving to anyone that comes over. So if you are able to somehow protect the trees from birds then peach and plum do grow well up on the highveld and they produce a lot of fruit and from when we used to get the odd uneaten one they tasted good.

Nice - I like the lime tree idea, even though we already have a lemon tree. Can always use them in a recipe.

Almond and olive trees also sound interesting. Almond isn't my favourite nut, but if it's fast-growing I can learn to use it, I'm sure. And I love black olives.
