We've never turned into New Market before. Are you sure?

Yes. New Market is on the route and going to be fun at the right angle left turn at the bottom of the down hill. CAUTION needed.

OK so here's another serious question from me then: Do I leave my race tyres at home and fit Gatorskins instead?

Anyone? Seriously, what's the state of the road surface like in general along this route?

Considering how the forecast shows rain for a fews days all the way up to race day, I will expect a lot of new potholes to have opened up by then, with a lot more surface gravel and debris lying around.

Especially if the weather is *** on race day, I am seriously considering just leaving my Gatorskins on. Any thoughts?

It's Jozi

Expect loads of potholes, drain guards missing, sections of dirt where the road has been ripped up for re-tarring.

After my query and answer on the Shova tyre selection (thanks for the commenst there, good race result) i will answer what i can. The roads are not in great shape. I live out lion park way and the roads are not great. Any downhill group will NOT be able to get around some of the pot holes, its just not going to happen. The lion park road is rough in a lot of sections but pot holes exist.

I am more worried about the glass and metal slivers that are everywhere on roads in Jozi. Beer bottles, remnants of burning tyres from service protests, broken down cars losing rear wheels and drive shafts from axles, etc happen often in Joburg (not joking).  I am 70 % sure its gatorskins and 30% racing tyre (to try and beat my boss who starts 2 groups ahead)...........

yea what Wyatt says... no sure why you need to show concern for possible potholes after the rain if there were 1 pothole per 1 meter of road in the first place  :whistling:

Since I'm not from there, it was a pretty simple question about the current state of the road surface considering the stories I hear about JHB these days.

But don't worry, I already got my answer from Too Tall.

Had a look at some of the work done on the MTB race for Sunday and its looking really good. Two completely separate routes for the 30k and 55K

Its Thursday guys, not FRIDAY.

Give Tombeej a break, if we need answers about road conditions etc for the Tour Druban or Amashova, Tombeej is always the first to offer up advice

I wouldn't stress too much tombeej

Two years ago i did it on a "harder" tyre and got two punctures

Last year on much softer tyres and got one puncture.

If you are going to get a puncture, fix it and TT to the finish

1. The roads are not THAT bad;

2. There are sections that are dodgy, but I'm sure the organisers would attend to this.

3. There are hundreds of manhole covers in the old suburbs.

4. Stay off the extreme sides of the road. Think of each lane as "jeep track" and ride on the same bit of tar a car's tyres would be on. Like the racing line on a motor racing circuit - seems to be the cleanest.

In 13 years of doing this event, the only time I got a puncture (2 in the same race) was when I didn't have gatorskins on. I'll keep riding with them on aluminium wheels.

Guess you'll be using Gatorskins on this year ???
