true the mention of cell phones...I commute either by bicycle or by scooter and probably 9 out of 10 people are looking at their phones in rush hour traffic....

you say that, but more and more i'm seeing cyclists checking phones using both hands, and some sending messages while out training. happy days all round.

Are you for real? Two cyclists get mown down in the yellow lane and you try to justify it with an oblique rule... Honestly no words can express what I think you are...

Why are you so confrontational? Why the attack? Legitimate questions were asked by Rapunzel. Have you seen the police report, statement, photos, etc.?

People say the car drivers are rude and doesn't care and are aggressive, but it's not them and us, but only us because most of us do in cars what we moan about on bicycles.

It's sad whenever somebody get knocked down. But do we have to be so hateful?

I agree I have seen them too, If I personally have to make/answer a call/text I pull over while I'm riding my bike...BUT I too am guilty of occasionally making a call/texting whilst driving a car...I do make a concerted effort to be more aware of my surroundings though when doing so...Doesn't make it right still.

You're probably way upset and that reflects in the spirit of the post, big JD. Understood.

It's okay to disagree, but your final sentence is way uncool.

It's day 3 for Jevandrè and Craig.

Sterkte.

Fair enough Andy and Dale. Apologies Rapunzel, a personal attack was not intended and is uncalled for. I was heated up after reading the thread as I ride that route all the time and have always felt pretty safe within the confines of the yellow line.

Ride safe gents.

Thanks for the update

I just dug out my bright flashing front and rear lights and I'm putting them on the road-bike for tomorrow mornings ride - nobody is going to say in court that he didn't see me! :cursing:

Hi

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss, I have a beautiful rd bike tht is becoming more of a conversation piece when I have guests rather thn fr cycling, reason being I am **** scared to venture onto our rd unless it's in a control race environment. With the combinationof increase in bike jacking and total disregard for cyclist presence on our rds resulting in accidents, my passion may lead to my death or injury, a isk I'm not prepared to take.

Get well soon young guns; unless there are changes to the authorities approach to cyclist accidents by motorists, there are going to be more incidents where cyclists response to motorists accidents or near accidents are going to turn violent due their frustration.

He has posted a legitimate question with his observation of the area and its important for us to understand why this accident happened to try minimise future similar incidents.

Cool man... and big up for apologising. Like Dale said, you are frustrated, as we all are.

If we can't even have a open and civilised debate between us cyclists, what are the chances of bridging the divide between other road users.

I'm of the opinion that if you want to see change, start with yourself whether it's cycling, driving, walking. Let's try to be considerate towards others. Not doing the least that's required, but doing more. Show compassion.

Was on Botlary yesterday at about 09:00 to Stellies.

Cycling well within yellow line. Was so almost knocjed by a white bakkie coming from the rear passing k@k close..

And a female just passing and doing 90 deg turn left right in front of us..

So many idiots on the road..

Speedy recovery..

The past couple of months there have been signs on polkadraai road indicating that no cycling is allowed due to the road works and I'm not sure if this is still the case.

I'm in no way taking the side of the motorist who should have stayed behind the cyclist if not safe to pass, but the last time I went on the road, it wasn't cycling safe for cycling unless riding on the roadworks side of the cones.

Craig and Jevandre, have a speedy recovery and hope to see you on your bikes again soon.

Signs are still up. Explicitly saying NO CYCLING. Has been up for a while and has been ignored for months.

Never got the impression he/she is laying blame with the cyclists - merely stating a fact. During construction there have been a good couple of car accidents in that dip due to the Vlaeberg turn off, cars speeding going down the hill and boards all over the place.

Last night there was a guy driving on the wrong side of the road due to confusing signs and directions.

We need to re-think cycling lights for road use. Most guys use front lights that will blind the sun and then strap a half dead firefly to their seatpost. On the road you would want it the other way round.

Very sad to read about this. I stay just around the corner from Polkadraai and use to train there, R304 and bottelary rd back home all the time. But Kyamandi is not safe any more and clearly a road with MASSIVE shoulders and clearly marked yellow lanes is not enough to keep us safe. So I chose to stick to dirt.

Speedy recovery for those involved.

Thanks Iwan Kemp  I'm in no way "blaming" the cyclists, but it is our responsibility to keep ourselves alive and there are times where the risk is unecessary.

Any update on their condition?

Sorry for such a late post.

Spoke to Craig's mother earlier today, she says he is in a lot of pain but he is surviving.

Jevandre is getting better, his Drs are happy with his progress, they will however be keeping him sedated for at least 24 - 48 hours (She told me this at about 13:00 today).

I'll be away from home for this week, will try to keep you guys posted. thanks to all of you for your prayers!!!
