I presume todays stage will have a longer cut off time than anticipated due to leaders taking longer. Gonna be a tough day out there.

Just read this on another fred....

"Hubber Blits is also riding - Team Braveheart.

Her team mate came in riding the last 50+Km on Blits's water bottle  - they had trouble with his seat and ended up placing her bottle over the post just to be able to finish."

Now tell me that this not HERO stuff!!

A "Pro" would have summoned his team lackey ....only to relieve him of his seat...and merrily carried on...maybe lost 2-3 min in the whole process...

===> imagaine 50kms on a water bottle??

The rules arn't written in stone. If they have a bad day because of weather or whatever, they can extend the cut- off.Im sorry but for this reason the Epic has become soft(to allow for the celebraties, old rugby players,ex models etc etc to complete the Epic.)If the epic needs to regain the name of been tough they need to make cut-off 8hrs,and if you havn't made it because of fitness or whatever or 50% of the field gets eliminated so be it.

if the cape epic in its current form is too soft for you then you must be a really tough guy...

The cape epic is an extreme challenge for a normal individual with a normal job and a healthy lifestyle, irrespective of the cut-off times. Also remember how the race is funded. Partially by sponsors, but mostly by a few hundred guys that pay R50k each for an entry. Anybody that pays the cash should have a right to ride and a right to finish.

If it were a pro-race where you had to finish within 15% of the winning time and can only be entered by invitation (like the european races) then it would have been a different story.

That's R 50k for the Team entry not each..

Eina, couple hrs away and the thread has already turned into a nob measuring contest.

I still believe you can't have everything. We want to race against the pro's,we want to ride in a UCI event. You enter what some might consider to be the toughest stage race in the world but at the end a lot of guys are looking for sympathy.Sorry,I believe if you enter, you get your sh*t together and do what needs to be done.

I still believe it's pointless having cut of times if they don't keep to it.

At Comrades you have to qualify to be on the start line so at least those at the Comrades have a certain level of fitness at the start. If your granny has the 50K and is lucky enough to get a entry she would be at Meerendal.Should I then feel sorry for her because it's her 'dream' or because she is old, unfit, overweight, has a job and children.

NO

Sorry ,you enter Epic of your own free will.I don't give any sympathy to those at the back because they just havn't done what is necessary to do Epic comfortably. If you taking shots every day scraping to make cut off you only got the man in the mirror to blame.

I think you need to go watch those back markers, sorry they shouldnt be there. If your aim is just to finish the epic in the 10 hrs every day its a very easy ride. For a race of this standars and for UCI points it has set the level too low.

Some have a crappy start and get stronger during and closer to the end. And there are also those who are awesome at the start and start to fizzle toward the end of the epic.

Seen this happen to other amateur teams as well as myself and partner. There are many things that can go wrong for you on the the day, from nutrition to mechanical.

Luckily when I was shait my partner was on form and vice versa.

Great leaning experience for any amateur cyclist.

It is a tough race. A friend of mine, very good rider dropped out on stage one from dehydration. I remember coming to the peak of the last climb and seeing him just laying there. His partner had left him to finish, I wanted to stay with him till help came but I had to ride off with my partner as we were cutting it close. It was very emotional and I remember tearing up a bit. To think that was the end of his epic.

He came to the starting chute the to cheer us on the next morning. You could see his disappointment.

For the pro's its a hard race, for those the tail enders it is a battle like no other. They are fighting giving up!

Then after a 10 hour ride they have very little time to prep for the next day. everything is a rush. Early morning and back on the bike with sore ass and and another long day ahead.

Good luck tail enders, be strong!

Are u ever ready for the epic?

If my memory serves me, 2012 stage 5 a pro male or female dropped out because of hypothermia. And amature riders managed to finish. So are you ever ready?
