So something that is irritating me.

In Benoni is a large SAPS mechanical school. One of the functions is a police learner driver program.

There are a crapload of police cars with learner stickers (in excess of 50 in the main parking area) all branded as learner vehicles.

These same cars crawl around the area at 14kmh doing silly K53 manoeuvres all day.

Surely having a drivers license should be a job requirement when applying to be a police officer?

I am not talking about advanced driving....

Secondly...whats the cost to Johnny Taxpayer for this little program?

Surely if we only employ licensed police officers, those funds could be used to train or hire more officers?

It used to be a requirement for all SAPS recruits to have at least a code 8 drivers license.

The SAPS then went on a recruitment drive and it was felt that it's discriminatory to exclude people who don't have drivers licences resulting in the current shortage of licensed SAPS members

Im a social worker and 08 was a non negotiable cos if you do community work you need to be mobile. However, that rule has been relaxed because many job applicants just didn't have a licence and we needed to employ to get on with the job. The work then assisted these folks with their drivers licence. It so happens that these folks dont come from homes where there is a family car where u stick an L sign and have ur dad yell at you wholeday. Im sure many okes like me were starting cars, pulling it forwards and backwards, taking it down the rd etc way before we could see over the dashboard and our feet just about can depress the clutch. Getting the licence was a mere formality where we probably had some good years behind us, illegally as well (ja, im guilty of this). Many of these folks we hired also had no money for lessons prior to getting the job. Not surprisingly, many of the dents on the fleet cars was caused by them with a licence. I think the same scenario is with Saps, the difference is social workers never needed to chase and race the vehicle to respond to a case, scary stuff when we have a policeman in pursuit with 8 x 1hr lessons

It used to be required to have some level of fitness, heard from a guy where the robber was mocking a big PHAT police officer to get his ass out of the car, he repeatedly told the cop. ." toe kom vang my"!!

I was trying to be politically correct, I was scared of labelled a race-ist, having to retract the statement and apologise to the hubbers (trend I am seeing in the news)

My mtb got stolen so reported it to saps and they took a statement and on 3 occasions they spelt 'bicicle'.

98% of hubbers could out run a saps. The other 1% being couch hubbers and the remaining 1% are those starting / getting back into it.
