GroenHoender Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Just curious: how does most of you take your SLR camera along on your rides? A cellphone is handy but it does not always have that awesome impact what a SLR camera offers in terms of imagery.
Skylark Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 I wouldn't mind doing it but it's just one more expensive thing to worry out getting stolen/hijacked. Some bike trails have some very good photographic opportunities, suppose if it's a trail that's never had any security issues/quite rural then it's good to go.

Now I have the Nikon equivalent of the 'Olympus Tough' shown above. Nikon Coolpix - waterproof, shockproof. It has no extending lens (has a digital zoom), and it has survived many mtb rides. I use a phone to phone, and a camera to take photos! The camera I have is 16mp. Danger Dassie Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Depends on what lens is paired up with the SLR? ... Me personally, if it's for a proper shoot and I need a down geared system. One body with the grip removed, two lenses (19-35 & 50mm 1.4) with one flash, multiblitz and flexi tripod for the flash, approx 20cm in length.A full setup goes in a Dakine camera bag with the extras and is comfortable enough on the bike. Phones have come a long way ito image quality, although I still find it a pain doing any post edits in PS or Lightroom on phone images. Generally use the phone on regular rides, but one of the best carry around cameras I've found is the Canon Powershot/Nikon equivalent. Sony, Olympus and Samsung also make some good cameras on this level, my experience is with the Canon and Nikon though. Megapixel count is highly relative though, a 9mp camera will produce better results than a 13mp phone camera. Mainly down to the size of the sensor capturing the pixel count. hboli4 1

Cam gets wrapped in a thin fleece top. If shooting trail action shots a wide angle lens and flash goes too. SLR is overkill for simple snapshots with your buddies though. Lots of nice compact cameras for this and most of them way better than camera phones

Desi Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 I'd guess most camera shops would stock these 'indestructible' little jobs - Nikon, Canon and Olympus have versions. Most are waterproof, dustproof and what they call 'shockproof' - you can actually drop the thing and it keeps on working. The shockproof is a blessing - you don't realise just how much you bounce around on an mtb!
