I don't get the arguments presented in this thread in terms of sponsorship, affordability and ability.

Joel's actually a helluva nice guy who does a lot for charity and a pretty decent cyclist. He and Jeremy Thompson came second in the 2014 W2W Adventure (not sure where they would've finished in the Race).

I look forward to following their race together in this year's Epic.

Good on you Joel and Anriette!!

That is rich, coming from you, the first to call him:

"a has been rugby drol"

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

You seem more like an asshole with an opinion, in my opinion.

I've now reread this thread and it seems you came out looking to show your trolling skill.

Call me what you want Tankman. I really couldn't give 2 sshitts. You clearly woke up on the wrong side of the dumpster this morning and for that I am deeply sorry. Oh ja... GFYS.

I'm sorry Mr Joel if I offended you by referring to you as a 'has been rugby drol'. I Really should have used 'has been springbok rugby legend'.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. My partner and I helped put Joel's cassette/rear wheel back together during the epic - he caught up with me in the chill zone to shake my hand and thank me for the help. Even remembered my name.

As for the Joel bashing - mano e mano people tend to be decent to each other - when offered anonymity on thehub they tend to be insulting keyboard twats.

That's precisely the way I summed the basher up

Joel does more for charity than most and I admire him

The fact that Joel is out there riding for the last 5 or 6 years has done so much good for charities and has also assisted in raising the profile for the sport and the Epic as the premier stage race the world over. It saddens me that some fail to see the bigger picture regarding this. The development platforms supporting the event and Epic in particular is robust enough to pick up all of our most promising development riders. Having Stransky in Liquifruit colours will mean much more for mountain biking than a mid-pack development rider.

I do love thehub - half the time we're moaning about development riders who don't appreciate their equipment and ride like pratts - the other half of the time we're saying that Joel is a pratt and the money would be better spent on development riders.........

In most cases these "celebs" as you call them, actually use their status

for good causes. Like raising funds for charities.

You keep telling yourself that in your universe

Definition[edit]

Sponsorship[1] is a cash and/or in-kind fee paid to a property (typically in sports, arts, entertainment or causes) in return for access to the exploitable commercial potential associated with that property, according toIEG.

Sponsorship has to have something in it for the sponsor and can be about their objectives rather than yours !!

Maybe ABSA should sponsor riders that cannot afford to ride instead of z-list celebraties!

lets calm down and think about this

its called business, every time joel goes past a camera they focus on him and he gets lots of tv time,,,,they "sponsor" for exposure

its EXPOSURE THEY AFTER not good deeds, its all about the benjamins baby, thats why they big business, if they wanted to do good deeds and help the poor they wouldnt be rolling in corporate money taking away houses of people who are falling on hard times

i think a thread called business economics 101 must be started, and one called charity
