Cancelled DSTV about a year ago and have been experimenting with various streaming and download options since.

My current setup is 4mb ADSL (180gb capped via WebAfrica) + Apple TV (US itunes account) + JustUnBlock to make Netflix think I'm in the US + Netflix. Works like a bomb for about R160 per month excl ADSL cost. You can also watch some of the free US channels that ship with the Apple TV like PBS and of course rent movies on iTunes.

Next challenge is to get Hulu+ working. Netflix tends to show older TV series while Hulu has all the latest stuff. Can anyone suggest a good DNS or VPN provider that works with Hulu?

UNOtelly is the bomb

I believe Afrihost is fairly good - don't use them myself but have heard good things

We use them extensively and besides a few DSL authentication hicups (which really only affect you if your router reboots - and they tend to be on top form wrt support) they have been great.

We have a 4mb line @ home with their 75GB + 75GB free capped option, I stream Hulu and Netflix 100%, plus for the kids 90% of all their programs can be streamed from Youtube -> Chromecast onto the TV

On holiday I was not prepared to pay MTN's rates for Data so I got them to add the mobile data access to my MTN cell number, changed to their APN and within 5 minutes had 5GB LTE data and a wifi hotspot set up.

I am not at all clued up on this sort of stuff but this is what I have been wanting to get set up at my place.

For starters can someone please explain how you go about getting a Netflix or Hula account set up with us being outside the US?

I've had a 4mb ADSL line since November and I LOVE it. I find that I no longer watch series or movies using DSTV. I'll rather download it and watch a couple of episodes when I've got the time. Also, when you go on holiday or don't have time to watch a specific episode you don't miss out. I will, however, keep the DSTV for the sport. I realize that a lot of it can be streamed, but I love the fact that there is a wide variety of sport readily available and I don't have to miss out on any live events. In addition I find that my kids don't mind for repeat episodes on the stuff they watch...

I have AppleTV wired up through my hi-fi with unotelly and Netflix. I love the appletv. My entire music collection is stored in Apples cloud so I play it directly from there. the sound quality beats that of my ipod by miles.

If I am bored with my music I can choose 1 of the 1000's of radio stations available to stream. This is an absolute blessing when you live in the EC and your only choices are algoa and Five.

And if I need some more choice, there is quelllo concerts which costs about R30 a month and has a moerse selection of live concerts to choose from

Or, of course there is You tube.

But my favourite thing at the moment is Red Bull TV. I can spend hours watching it. And its free

I have set it up in my bar, so its all mine - much to the kids dissapointment.

We cancelled our DSTV subscription for Dec/Jan as we were not going to be home for that period and I am amazed how little I have missed it. Looks like I will be joining the club good and saying good bye permanently!

the other nice thing to do is ( if you have an ipad) you can download the BBC i-player app. This is BBC's version of the DSTV catchup. BBC is free if you live in the UK. With an Unotelly account you can watch all the BBC content for free. the ipad will mirror it onto the apple tv so it plays in HD on you tv

It is like anything in life, you think you need it, but when it is gone you get by and eventually you wonder why you needed it.

What is the minimum upgrade/downgrade time frame? I have Netflix/Uno Telly etc, and want to drop to the R29 DSTV option and upgrade for TDF/World Cup etc

Activation and deactivate is instant. But now, once you activate it stays on for rest of billing period so nearly a month or only a day.

I only keep my Walka sub active for R49 pm

Going to test it tonight if i can "airplay" the DSTV drifta from the Ipad to the apple TV, would then solve the sport requirements.

I know the quality might not be fantastic but for emergencies (where online streaming is not available) then it might be acceptable

The drifta resolution is 320 x 240, I don't think it will be acceptable.

That's a good question - I'd can the DStv in a heartbeat then.

On a side note, Multichoice should think about a SuperSport only digital bundle. Sure, they would lose me and some others as a premium subscriber, but, they'd gain so many people who only want the sport. I mean, the infrastructure on their side is already in place for it, I can already stream Catch Up, Box Office, and sport as a premium subscriber.

They could make even more money if they went with a pay-per-view option too...

do you really think multichoice don't think about this? if it was win-win then they would do it, obviously it's not.
