Sunburn!

My problem with sunscreen for cycling is that it tends to run into your eyes if you sweat a lot, and burns which makes you cry.........

No need to put sunblock on your forehead or around your eyes if you wear a helmet with visor and decent sunglasses. I put it on my ears, nose and the rest of my face below the eyes. No eye irritation....

i swear by the island tribe stick - battle to get it off in the shower even with soap!

I am a huge fan of island tribe, used it for many years as a surfer and it would last a 3hour+ session.

Although not a ginger, I have a very fair skin, use 100 factor on face, ears end neck, and Techni 50 on arms and legs. Never had to re-apply the 100 stuff, but have to re-apply rest after 2hrs.

I use a very thin sun protectors on my arms. They actually keep you cool. So much better than sunblock. I have a spf+ sunblock from the australian cancer council which was great, but just about finished. Will try the island tribe spf50 when I get a new one.

The Nivea SPF50+ spray and cream is probably the best I've ever used.

However, I found that when using it on my arms, although I never get sunburn, my arms are tanned a shade darker after every long ride. Not what I want to happen.

Begrudgingly bought a pair of arm protectors. I don't like wearing them, but like skin cancer even less.

Same boat. My arms are like 10 shades darker than the rest of me. I use protectors unless I get really hot, then they come off, but it seems that while I'm not burning, still tanning :(

Is one supposed to still put Sunscreen on under it?

Need to start diligently applying the sunscreen as well when driving :(

one thing I do know is that in a country like South Africa..the cost of sunblock should be as low as possible for all to apply in mid summer...but at prices that range from R100 to R500 for 100ml or 200ml that is not the case

Also a pet peeve - 2 biggest problems in SA - skin cancer and HIV/Aids, yet proper condoms and sunscreen cost a freakin fortune.

Don't think so. Have a pair of First Ascent protectors, which are apparently rated at SPF50+. Will see after my 3hr+ ride this Sunday at Modders if they actually work.

I imagine there's a shelf life on them though. Surely after a number of washes their efficacy diminishes.

Also tell me if you find them uncomfortably hot especially in the heat we having.
