This may be true in certain circumstances but not rush hour traffic. How are motorists supposed to give us 1 - 1.5 metres especially when you consider Cape roads aren't exactly the widest.

I'm afraid that the "FEW" are now becoming more than "just a few"

There are now more cyclists that feel they are entitled to ride as THEY want to.

We are going to have a number of incidents before the CTCT.

Motorists are also becoming more intolerant and more are feeling cyclists should not be on the road at all.

(This is how I feel about CT at the moment)

The gap is widening instead of us becoming more tolerant and user friendly toward all road users.

After spending 2 weeks in CT over December, I don't know how anyone would want to ride on your roads single file or in bunches. Spoiled here in die Oos Kaap I suppose.

To the OP , you should have asked me before posting .

Two weeks or so ago I posted on this forum what I thought was meant to be positive ideas on rider safety vis a vis better visibilty . Besides one semi rude response the thread died .

But let one motorist threaten the safety of a cyclist it runs into pages .

I gave up .

Coming from joburg, and cycling a little while I was in holiday in December, I found Cape Town motorists to be shockingly polite and patient towards me while I was on the road.

Gave me loads of space, actually saw me!! And let me go ahead of them when the road was too narrow to overtake or share. I was in a state of disbelieving bliss!!! Your ratio must be one asshole to 100 kind drivers. Here in joburg I've only ever seen it get as high as 2 kind drivers to 100 assholes.

Please keep it that way!! Don't take kindness for weakness and expect motorists not to get upset.

Please keep Cape Town a cycling haven, I'm planning on living there in the very near future!!

Went cycling with my wife, father- and sister-in-law this past holidays. We are from Brackenfell and the in laws from Joburg.

The could not believe the quality of our roads and the patients and friendliness of many motorist and cyclist.

I agree that we should try and keep it like that. Once one of the parties is fed up, its over and nice cycling will not be with us any more.

I am not sure, but wasn't the law passed that forces cyclist to ride in single

file?

I too can not confirm or deny that but if it where true, How would they police it? Much the same as how do they police the new 1M gap rule? I'm from JNB so am not lucky enough to have that rule but I'm just wondering is that law a success down there? And what is the punishment?

I would in fact rather pass group A one rider at a time as apposed to riding head on into traffic as in group b

Also group B is a common occurrence around the cape, and I am pretty sure they are clubs rather than social groups.

Have to agree with the OP, these 2 cyclist were also owning the road on Sunday

that's a 20km/hr speed limit area. the motorist has no justifiable right to expect the cyclist riding a little slower to move out of the cars way in a hurry. Chappies is too narrow for anyone to be too stupid but motorists seem to find new levels of stupidity everyday.

Iffy to comment on this, they are not exactly riding side by side. In this photo the one rider is behind the other but more away from the side of the road. But yes if they were like this would a friendly hoot not have gotten their attention?

Maybe the rider behind was moeg and just hanging on and not really thinking?

If I were that rider a friendly hoot would have got me back in position and a sorry wave from me.

Even though there's a 20kph speed limit I would have expected them to be riding single file.

If we hooted we would have got the finger and we had ladies and kidds in the vehicle...so just stayed behind them until they decided to pull over. We were in no hurry, but an inconsiderate motorist might have had a different approach

OK, not taking sides, but you do notice that you cannot overtake one at a time in A, so you'll be driving next to them, half ass into oncomming traffic for longer, endangering them and yourself, where as with B you overtake like you would a normal slow moving vehicle, like a tractor, only when its safe to do so with no traffic from the front?

I am copying this from the PPA site.

"Cyclists (riding for sport, recreation and for transport/commuting) have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists – and the SA Road Traffic Act even defines a cyclist as a driver of a motor vehicle"

"Cyclists also have the right to the left-hand side of the road (not the extreme edge of the left-hand side)."

http://www.pedalpower.org.za/road/

I often get drivers that almost want to push me off the road when i am as far left as what i am comfortable, especially if there is no shoulder. Definitely do not get viewed as "a driver of a motor vehicle".

Sometimes, its not owning the street or being selfish but a concious decision to protect yourself. I have in areas where there is incline with no shoulder and a high curb on the left decided to rather cycle in the middle of the left lane where i am more visible (there are 2 lanes) to prevent idiots from trying to overtake me in this area as some have tried before and pushed me into the curb causing me to almost fall. Instead they can wait the 20 seconds till i get to the top which makes me feel safer. Its only like 150m.

Often drivers hoot at cyclists as well before overtaking. I am not sure if this is to say "Hi well done", "Go for it" or "Watch out i am passing you" but every time it happens i skrik my moer af.

Drifting towards the middle, is something I do as well, when safe, especially in areas where as you mentioned, hugging the curb is not ideal I.E. The bend as one approaches Muizenberg from Simonstown. That corner is quite sharp and often motorists pass far too close.

A courteous wave to express gratitude for a driver's patience also goes along way.
