Sorri I thought you were talking about a less congested swim.

With the current format (large fields, lap courses) I don't think it is possible to get a perfectly spread (no drafting) cycle. With the way IM events are going (everyone wants to do them) it risks going the same way standard / Olympic distances went.... Remember last century when drafting was not allowed in the Olympic distance.

Maybe if they increased the time gaps drastically between age group starts and had 1 lap routes, or reduced the number of entrants (shakes head)

That would seriously annoy all those ouens that bought tri bikes

Exactly, ironman themselves must have loads of data from previous events too..easy enough to get into a database and correlate.

the idea of a rolling start is very cool though ...fighting 500 other ppl to get to the first buoy for the first 150m is always painful

Fixed that for you :P

Only thise that have one bike (a tri bike)

That would be a dark day indeed and I don't see it happening tbh, but then some say... Never say never be

Overall I think we will have to get used to some congestion or larger start gaps

Having caught up on the Q&A, I think the rolling start will be great for most - maybe just not for age groupers who are racing for position rather than time (in the future I would think top age groupers should get their own start after the pros).

Interesting to note comments about likelihood of the swim being cancelled - including if the sardine run happens to be late...  Would be a huge pity so hopefully low likelihood...?

Anyone know the typical sea temperature in early August?  Related to that, anyone brave enough to do open water swim anywhere in Joburg this time of year?  I guess the alternative is to look like a real winner at the V&A pool in my wetsuit...!?

We made inquiries not so long ago about doing a swim at Heia Safari and they advised it was closed for the winter, maybe you can still swim at Emmarentia

Hi All, I have looked for threads regarding wetsuits - I am a newbie and believe I am required to buy a wetsuit?

Any advise on this would be appreciated, I am based in JHB (northern suburbs) so am looking for something descent for a 1st hit out that I can use again if the bug bites.

Thanks in Advance

you are not obliged to have a wetsuit and I doubt DBN will be wetsuit compulsory (under 16deg)

It is however recommended that you have one due to the extra buoyancy it provides.

I am also a noob and got a 2xu A1. http://www.2xu.co.za/index.php?route=product/product&path=60_66&product_id=54

Hi there I am Terry

The best course of action is to rent the first time. I convert the rental after event day if you decide to buy, You will have a little over three weeks now to get the suit get into the water and get to know the wetsuit. By race day you ready to rock n roll. After the event you get to tell me the war story and make the decision to return or purchase. You either buy the rental or  purchase new or demo which ever suits your needs. terry@xterrawetsuits.co.za 0794824658.
