I am scared of ending up like my avatar photo....

I have been trying to work out which way i should go down the single track called Vasbyt at Tokai. Its quite scary with that big steep drop off the jeep track but only gets worse because there are steps that go into a very bumpy section on the left hand side. It looks as if you can also go to the right over a fallen down tree but that looks even more scary as it leads to those big jumps...

I need some advice on how to approach this obstacles. i have been riding bikes for years but this new Tokai stuff seems a bit beyond me. How can i get the skills I need to stop feeling intimated by stuff like this?

Help!

how are you coming into the trail, if you go further to the right/left theres a "chicken run" section.

just be very careful when exiting, as guys come down there at quite a speed!

EDIT : if you coming from the snake trails or the mast side, then its the first entrance.

Howzit and welcome to the hub..

Try and connect with Marko35s or El Capitan here, they should be able to help..

Marko even took be down Vasbyt the first time I was there and I'm still alive..

Before you head along the jeep track above the scary big steep drop off the jeep track you mention there is another track before that on the Rondebosch side of your entrance. This is initially a bit of a drop but goes through the trees and is a great ride.

I ride down those top steps after the berm reasonably quickly.

But tailing a couple of guys who had the skills (and courage) to jump the same steps I lost 50 metres on them in a matter of seconds.

Got to learn to jump this year.

I looooove dropping into that big berm at the top.  Any roughness after that is worth it!  Its not that rough going over the top anyway.

Whoever built that big berm originally, should get a lifetime free pass for Tokai

I know what you mean... I've slowed down on that berm significantly since I almost saw my ass properly about 3 months ago. Went faster than ever and I just got bucked thanks to too little talent and too much rebound. Now I'm taking it mega slow and just building the confidence again.

But following someone like Kevin (ttrail n tar) down there just shows how slow I am. Hate to think what it'd be like following Rika or Duran etc.

Anyway. To the op.

2 lines.

Left hand line straight down the roots (route I used to take until 2 months back) which points you down the gully, next to the long log jump

Right hand (and probably eeasier) line overge the rock and tonwards the log jump, after which you have 2 choices - duck left to avoid the big jumps, or stay straight and hit the big jumps and then after the tampon (big deck jump) you can either jig left back in to vasbyt or continue down dh3

The alternative is to go down Bluegums, which cuts out the top section and joins just below the no entry signs. That is quite a lekker but mellow route for the beginners...

Yip, I must admit that start to Vasbyt can be quite unnerving, as are a number of sections in Tokai. But in time, you'll get it. You just need to do it once or twice and then you'll think nothing of it thereafter. Just try and roll it, with your weight placed with a bias to the rear, and try to keep your heels dropped.

I'm certainly no expert, but that worked for me.

In fact, in the beginning, I'd stop and push the section with the steps.

Just takes one time to convince yourself that you can do it.
