It is not about the entry fee only. Hotels, restaurants etc. etc. With Blackbeard on this. Money is not the issue. Neither is respect. It is all about safety.

I am really failing to see the disrespect. If the planned route is unsafe or would in any way hamper the emergency services, reroute the ride if possible. If its safe, keep the route as is - we need to acknowledge what has happened and what has been done by so many to protect life, limb and property. It will not be the expected beauty, but one might have a sense of being part of something bigger. It might just be the ride that stands out for many when they recall all the rides they have done.

I agree.

And if they want to cancel the event, everyone should at least have the choice to have their money refunded, or donated. It will be unethical to cancel an event which the people paid for and then canceling and using the money for something else.

If it is by choice, I would say keep the money, but if they just keep it I will be the one screaming the loudest.

I doubt that they'll just cancel outright.  Too many people pay a lot of money do come here and do this race.  And then Rotary heavily relies on the money brought in to fund it's multitude of development ventures.  They would not easily give up on that income.

i think the best here is to have an alternative route, even if its just a out and back on the highway. The people that came far (not me) let them have a ride and stay in their hotels which they paid for.

If they cancel and we dont get refunded.... throw every single cent into "stay wider of the rider" every night when the soaps re on! Let every person watching soaps see that we want a safer road for all!

Hope they dont cancel! Im ready for my 02h50m !!!

Best they include a nice tough climb in this new route to pop the wheel suckers who usually hang on until the bottom of Smits Winkel  :whistling:

I cannot see any alternative other than changing the route.I somehow doubt whether it would be cancelled, too many people have flights/hotel's etc booked and paid for.

I am flying down to Cape Town tomorrow morning no matter what the decision is.

In the meanwhile I will pray for everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.

By the time the fires are out the emergency services will have battled it for around the clock for almost a week.

Would they have the capacity to implement and execute a plan B or even C for the race without a break in between?

I recon we might see the Tour move out to the Northern burbs for the first time in history :-)

A colleague just mentioned something I never thought of. If they detour the route over OKW and the wind picks up strongly during the day can you just imagine the risk of ash inhalation? It would be a huge safety issue for riders.

Interesting days we live in.
