How often do you ride alone?

I am a roadie and I ride alone most of the time and in the morning. I love it. Will join in with buddies over the weekend when they ride and contact me. I always tell my wife the route that I will take. Always have my cellphone with me. On a long ride, I will drop her message when I stop for coffee.

Quite surprised at how many Saffas still ride alone, wot with the criminal element

Crime problems are often very localised and to our knowledge, there's not been a single criminal incident on our trail network since it started up in 2009.

We have however had our fair share of extremely bad accidents (including broken necks and broken backs) which makes me extremely cautious and conservative when riding alone. Having a phone in your back pocket isn't much use if you're on the deck with a broken neck.

Big please - rather carry too much identification. Don't only think of yourself and your family - think of the poor person who may end up being responsible for getting you medical attention.

98%alone.... I ride with earphones with mic and iPhone Siri... So if I can't move I can send my location to my wife if needed. Switched to a 920 with live track too so she can follow me. I don't give a day about what pal say about earphones and a phn. It's for my safety.

If I'm going to a park type place that I know well , I'm quite happy to ride on my own, a friend of mine was commenting on the fact that we're polar opposites - she won't go on her own, while I love it.

I've always been concerned about safety from a criminal point of view but when I went for a ride at Northerns on my own and had an epic wipeout - that was rather scary - also that day I went without my phone as it was a spur of the moment thing.

I do tend to be more careful in my own though especially when I go for a dusk ride, knowing there's fewer people around.

Won't stop though, therapy for the soul.

Solo is great for the soul (o).

Used to ride solo all the time, and it really is great. Had a bad fall where i thought my collarbone was gone for sure, winded lying in the dirt...pulled myself towards myself and ended up riding back to the trailhead.

Made me think that even tho i had a phone, the problem comes in when you are knocked unconscious or end up with severe head trauma or hemorrhage.

The other day wife rode with me, she went into anaphelactic shock, and i think if she was alone she would have " walked it off" because she is hard headed like that, and it would have ended up with severe concequence.

Alas, its part of the appeal of riding a bicycle to jump on it spur of the moment and tear up a section of road/trail only to come back and brag how awesome that sneaky shred was....

Riding the roadie alone was never a problem for me. Then all of a sudden most of my mates were into mtb so I bought one, since then its mostly been on my own. Im hoping when winter rolls around they will get back into it though.

Its really interesting seeing how many people ride alone. I need to prepare better in future.

Never!

I have a responsibility to look after club rides, not out of choice but to remind club members when they're riding irresponsibly, and to tell them when to slow down (for the members that were dropped along the way). The best part is when I can have a normal conversation with another member and don't have to shout "keep left", or "single file", etc., etc., etc.

The only time I get to ride alone is from home to the start of a club ride or race that is close to home. If I know the ride is a certain distance and I want extra mileage, then I'll do those extra miles on my own, close to home (a few before and a few after the ride).

Hi Gerald - was a bit miffed on Saturday 6'40 on Swartkoppies after the R59 to see GW taking up 2 lanes of the road, with some wayward riders spilling out of the inside lane. but then there was quite a heap of cyclists on that ride.

I ride more alone than with people, though this is mainly on weekdays.

The main reason, its easy to go with your own flow,,how far, how long, what trail, how hard.

I do have different friends to ride with, problem is we all have certain ideas of what , and how we want a ride to be, and its not always possible to suit all.

I do take some risks (on my own) on my well known trail ,  but wear a full face for  the risky stuff, and if not feeling well balanced, back off.

Were you in a Hilux (think it was a Hilux) with a bike on the back?

Saturday was a HUGE problem... some peeps haven't got a clue how irresponsibly they ride.

GW took the service lane and one more lane. I would say thats reasonable. I rode behind them.

Anyway, I only ride alone. Whenever I'm not alone, I immediately declare a race until I'm alone again.

Tomorrow morning I will ride alone. Not sure where. Can be somewhere in America or in France. Or even a route in South Africa....on my virtual trainer (Cycleops Power beam) with some video footage and automatic controlled Resistance.

And tomorrow evening I might ride with some buddies. Not sure where. Can be somewhere in America or in France. Or even a route in South Africa....on my virtual trainer (Cycleops Power beam) without video footage but still automatic controlled Resistance. ONLINE RACING!

I often ride alone.

All my routes are on Sportstracks, and numbered. When I leave I tell the Mrs I am doing route 1, 2, 3 ... etc and I will be back in 3 hours. If not phone me and let it ring through twice (have to pull over get phone out the back pocket). If no answer, then you know where to come looking for me.
