Maintenance of Bike brands

Certain bikes are easier on the maintenance along with components. Rockshox I'm told for over Fox. Single pivot systems as well. Buy the components that are more prone to wear and tear when they're on sale, like chains and cassettes. That's what I've done.

This sort of says it all... On special...

That cassette is twice the cost of my mountain bike. :P the trek 800 is great for my occasional 60 Kay mtb mass participation event and any time want to go off road. Spend your money where you send your time! I have not spent a cent on maintaining the trek and its still hammering along. :P

I do the servicing of my duel suspension bikes myself, pivot bearings is easy to repack the crease and if it is necessary to replace the bearings, they are relative cheap at bearing shops as is the hub bearings and is easy to replace them. Doing the service myself, I can shop on web for best part prices and I always keep stock of high wear parts. Some bike shop rip customers off with services.  Bike shop charge R 600.00 for minor service on rear shock, so I check manufacture website and minor service is cleaning of air chamber, only part to replace for minor service is a quad washer available at bearing shops for R 10.00 time spend to do minor service 30 minutes. Front Fox shock minor service is to replace felt washers, seals and oil and is very simple to do. Use You Tube and google if uncertain and save your self thousands of Rands.

First service after 50 hours, second after 150 hours. After that, once a year.

That's not correct. The service interval is time based. One a year if you don't use it often. It should actuall be serviced every 50hrs for dry conditions, 20hrs if you ride in wet conditions.

Totally agree with you, I'm just also curious how many guys save up for top end bike and see it as a once-off expense and not take in account the cost of maintaining such a bike..

Lots. I've had a client fork out R 8k for repairs to an Anthem he bought for R 20k second hand. Rode it for 18 months without so much as a clean, then wondered why it wasn't working so lekker.

Complete drivetrain, BB, fork stanchions, shock service, pivot bearings, cables, pads, brake bleed etc etc.

He won't be doing that again. And he's by no means the only one.

yeah but its just a stanchion lube oil change which you can do yourself. The damper fluid change out is 120hrs-150hrs

Yeah but I think with Spaz Brain shocks if you service it yourself you loose the warranty. Spaz wins the maintenance expense race by far. I prefer the standard shocks with remote to Brain. Human brain is better than mechanical shock brain.

What attracted me to the SC TB is that they will give you new bearings for free if you send in your old ones. Not that bearings are that expensive, but it speaks to their ethos of encouraging SC riders to work on their own bikes.

The SC website provides you with a complete breakdown of all the pivots with torque specs and shows you how to replace bearings etc. They also give you a grease gun and grease with the frame so you can regrease the bottom pivot yourself.

I serviced my front and back Fox CTD forks for 2k about a month ago. Used stokeworks in Cape Town.

My bike done a lot of mountain biking, commute over mountain regularly to work. I bought it in July last year. The tyres don't have much thread on it now. I neglected to check chain wear and as a result it will mean that I have to change chain, cassette and chain rings at the same time. So the next few months aint going to be cheap. So if you use your MTB for what it is made for then be prepared to spend. I change my brake pads now, top up my own Stans, so slowly I'm trying to rely less on the LBS. The Brain shock is probably the most expensive thing to service but I love that piece of equipment and no what was at stake so can't moan now.

Just had my Epic Comp service last week after about 1000 km of riding. Invoice after discount was R 2500. Brain service as well as from shock. Wheel bearings and head set replaced.

From now Spez will only service the brain shock.  As for the rest It will be myself with the help of you tube.

Love the Epic but do most of my training on my Crave and leave the Epic to do the races.
