The frequency of fires in areas of 1. plantations and 2. on trails (mainly by virtue of the plantation) makes speculation unavoidable.

8 point source in the Muizenberg incident during SE gale conditions... think about it.

but the official word spread across all forms of media is that it was accidental? Do you have a copy of the report? I'ld like to read up about these 'nuances' the author mentions, 'nuances' that makes coming to a conclusion not as simple as declaring it accidental.

I have almost zeor doubt that Muizenberg was Arson.

But to what end?  Political?  Making WC "ungovernable"?  Doesn't seem like a likely cause and effect.

Most probable theory I've heard is firemen themselves seeking work and overtime pay or recognition.

The TMNP/SANParks appointed investigator has said it was "Accidental Negligence" (at least what I've heard on CapeTalk).

I haven't heard anything from David Klatzow, who the City appointed to investigate.

Well if it was negligence that sets my mind at ease at least from the point of there not being some lunatic out there that may do this every year.  Then again, there is still some idiot(s) walking around moering their bottles and cans in the veld and making fires in the middle of reserves because you know "it's their land to begin with".

eish eish eish.. the last bastion of mtb trails up in smoke..

This is really turning out to be the worst year for MTB'ers in the Western Cape, since its inception.

Seriously sad!!

RIP to the pilots of the downed chopper.

Just when we thought fires were behind us, bring on the bloody rain already...

JB what bugs me is that the fire at the tunnel was visible already early morning when I left for work. At the time quite small. Why not hit it and kill it before it flares up properly - which by the sounds of you, it now has... now they have to fight on two fronts!

Bains fire was looking quite bad last night already when I went for a run - and that from Paarl. S-car-go's correct - the scale is in no way justified from the overflying shot.

Best of luck to the fighters. Very saddened to hear of the loss of two lives... RIP

I went for a ride last night up Paarl mountain, and the Bains fire looked terrible from above. It was right in there between the two mountains. Fire at the tunnel seems better, it looks a lot better. But the Bains fire is looking seriously worse, much more smoke, also the ash is now starting to fall outside here in Paarl.

Plenty smoke. I've had meetings in and around Paarl today. On my way to Wellington now. Sad to see this beautiful area like this.
