Lunch time rides FTW!

Did a sunset (well almost) ride on sunday, only got going around 2:30pm. I think there was one other rider that started a couple of minutes after us, but we virtually had all the trails to ourselves.

Very weird for me to hit the trails so late, I blow my radiator very easily in summer so hitting the trail after 10am is foreign notion.

I just did my first mid-week 2.30pm ride down here. Not another soul on the trail - absolute heaven. But i did wonder what would happen if I crashed on the black route I was on, with no one around...

I rode in winter last year (in the mornings, in the dark) until I got bronchitis.  Started riding again.  Another round of bronchitis struck and more antibiotics.  Tried one ride.  More bronchitis, more antibiotics.  Ended up in hospital in late November, as the doc's couldn't figure why the bronchitis wasn't responding to multiple antibiotic treatments.

Anyway, in the spirit of NOT HTFU-ing, this year I joined a power training studio and only ride my bike over weekends when it's warmer.  So far, so good and no bloody bronchitis.

Somehow my cycling season over the last few years has stretched from May through to mid October.

I love the early morning rides in winter. The worst part of the ride is at the start and it only gets better from there.

I believe in the Belgian approach that there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. I dress warmly, but not to much so. I am rather cold for 10 minutes at the start and comfortable for the rest of the ride than snug as I leave home and sweating after two kays.

In winter the roads are quiet, groups are small, traffic before work builds up about 20 minutes later and so roads are generally quieter for longer, and in Jo'burg it is dry.

Having said that, heading home across the Parkview golf course at 06h20 this morning, my fingers were feeling the cold. Warmer gloves tomorrow.

This is my Fat and Happy period of the year.

One forgets the fringe benefits of not getting out of bed early on a Saturday morning...

And that does not leave me cold...

Whatever the crows dont eat will be stumbled upon by the next riders over the weekend.

I have had the same thoughts, it usually sticks to the back of your mind and automatically a wee bit of extra caution is exercised when hitting the trails...

I hate winter and I hate cold but when I enter for races I don't have a choice but to get out there and train. Besides if you have decent winter kit the hardest part like spinnekop said is getting out of bed at 03h30. But if I don't have a race to motivate myself for I generally just lie in bed awake from 03h30.

03:30  :w00t:

Okay, 04:30 is not too far off.

I find it's actually "warmer" before the sun rises, then its a few degrees Celsius colder.

We have about 5-8 riders on our early bird rides (32-34Km) on weekends before the main club ride - gives the faster/dedicated guys a chance to get some quality in before mixing with the club.
