Buying 2nd hand: beware of being duped

Im sorry OP but it's up to the buyer to request as much information on a second hand purchase from another province / city as possible.

I sold my M9 recently and the buyer requested an insane amount of information. A total of 43 photos were sent and a string of questions answered.

If you felt the photos were low-res it was up to you to request higher quality ones.

On visiting GM Cycles you should have inspected the fork before taking it and tossing it in your boot as you said. At this point you could have contacted the seller and said that the fork is not acceptable and you aren't taking it.

I do feel for you man but sadly as a buyer you need to ask the questions.

that is moertoe - School fees indeed. there must be so many of these sitting around that surely someone could find a way to 'repair them'.

the op is very modest when he says he doesn't know much about bikes. he must have learnt something when he rode from durban to cape point unsupported along the freedom trail way back when.

Hi Jamsack

Your fork might still be useful.

I had a 120mm Fox that had the same worn stanctions. Replacing stanctions and re-building was too expensive relative to the value of the fork, so I rather bought a new fork from CRC. I then got Omnico to change the travel of the stuffed fork to 100mm by removing (inserting?) the right internal spacer. That meant that a different and undamaged part of the stanction was now active and functional. It served flawlessly for a few more years on an Anthem.

So. don't throw it away just yet.

Forks are like icebergs... if you can see a little action on the stanchion up to then there is bound to be alot more that you can't see underneath. Only way is to break them open and have a look - a seller will rarely do that and a buyer can only really do that once it's in the hand.

I've had nothing but great experiences on the hub buying and selling but have two rules when it comes to it:

1: If you're buying something you can't inspect yourself in another city then only shell out as much as you're happy to lose and not worry about.

2: If it bounces and fits on a bike then 'droo must look at it first. He's saved me a fortune and I'll always go back to him.

Unfortunately I think with time elapsed before it came to light then you're pretty much poked.

Yeah Mecer is a brand of computer. Mercer make some incredible frames which are popular on here.

Was all tongue in cheek though.

Hi Hubbers,

It would seem I am famous!

I will be honest I didn't see this coming. I'm just kidding, after my dealings over whatsapp with Jamsack I didn't expect anything less.

I don't think I need to air my side of the story to the full extent but I want to point out a few things.

1.You got an amazing fork for R2500.

2.If you had any suspicion of damage when you apparently spotted it on picking it up from the shop then you should have said something then, yet you didn't.

3.You are trying get your money back 9 months after purchase. In the words of Alec Mann, "You wont fool me once...never mind twice."

Bottom line is even with you trying to bring my name down on a public forum I will still sleep just fine tonight knowing I sold a fork that was immaculate condition.

PS. No need to bring Greg Minnaar Cycles into this as they were merely holding the fork for you. The expertise within Greg Minnaar Cycles are immense and yet you still felt no need to point out the "so called" scratch you claim was there when you picked it up.

Cheers,

Alec Mann
