CT marathon still going ahead, limited to 12,000 runners and mandatory free Covid testing prior to running.  Peace races (5 & 10km) cancelled, trail races still happening.

Seems like it will be a massive undertaking to test close to 12 000 people and I’m not sure how runners will be kept covid compliant at water tables but hopefully they can get it done. I am really hoping it goes ahead - it will be awesome to run a race again surrounded by people.

This is very tempting as I am in Cape Town that weekend.. My only concern is normally with 12 000 people collecting your race number is a massive process now that want to add testing to the mix

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has officially been confirmed as an Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) candidate race - the first marathon in Africa to be nominated.

The announcement marks the commencement of a multi-year evaluation process conducted by AbbottWMM.
In order to become a Major, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will be required to meet certain criteria for three years and if successful, will join an elite group of races - Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, Virgin Money London Marathon, BMW-BERLIN Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon - as a new member of the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2025.

That would be absolutely amazing!

I'm glad the route doesn't go through Paarden Eiland anymore! That was a little depressing to be honest.....

I find this news rather interesting. Potentially great news for SA and Cape Town but am interested to know the requirements and hoops to jump through to get it right. And particularly the costs involved as I’m sure they will be rather substantial, given the scale of the World Marathon majors group. It is after all a business, like the UTMB business model, so I’m sure large sums of money will need to be handed over and spent to get anywhere close to real consideration. Having done a few of the majors, as well as a few big city marathons (including Cape Town a few years ago), I get the feeling it can potentially be done but at what cost??

Does that matter? Who would be paying the assumed amount of money?

Currently only candidate status, I presume that once it gets AbbottWMM status, entry will be by qualifying, similar to Boston etc?

As for cost, expect entry fees will go up significantly.....

Great news, never ran the CPT marathon but might when I am in my prime. Heard there is a part of the route which is slow can't remember if it is cobbels but if they can change the route to become ultra fast like Berlin, London it will definitely feature in the Top 5 globally

Might be hard to compete with the likes of Berlin and London on the ‘flat course’ side of things. It has to be as close to pancake flat as possible for that. And ideally the route needs to show off the city. Somehow don’t think creating a world record fast course will be the focus.

Not necessarily. But it does start to matter if the likelihood of success is minimal from the outset and it’s taxpayer money being spent. I am of course not suggesting failure is a possibility and I’m sure a proper assessment has been done. But if one looks at the other big city marathons around the world who are not even trying to become a major and with the only other candidate event being Chengdu marathon (after Singapore marathons withdrawal) it makes one wonder. Cape Town is a Gold Label marathon which puts it against many other great city marathons already.
Who would be paying? I imagine the organisers and ultimately the race sponsors - Sanlam, a few others, the City of Cape Cape and Western Cape government (ie the taxpayer)??
Maybe someone here has better knowledge of the process involved.

I get the feeling this is all a bit of 'I think' vs 'I know'....

I do also think it typifies South Africans. Most countries would look at it and say, 'Man, wouldn't it be so awesome if we were part of the prestigious series? It will bring more tourists outside of peak season, really play to our strengths as a city and showcase the city' etc......

Here it just brings weird assumptions and negativity. I'm of the opinion that this is a really cool initiative. The Cape Town Marathon has definitely been active in adapting it's approach during COVID, happy to accept that the route needed changing, has a pretty good marketing team and seems to be in a better place than 2 Oceans and other equivalent events.

Sanlam aren't fools, so I'd hazard a guess they wouldn't be on board unless their i's have been dotted. They are after all, an investment company, so I doubt they would invest in something that is as big a risk as assumed.

I hope it happens. I refuse to say anything negative about companies, events and the city actively trying to evolve for the better.

Kind-of a random question, but what do you guys-and-gals look out for when in the market for running sunglasses?

I'm a bit rough on my glasses, kind-of clumsy so they drop easily. Thus, I am not keen on expensive brands, I'll feel too sorry for them to actually use them. I've used Darc's in the past. Good price and they held up well to my usage. They were fairly like, which seems like a good attribute for running.

Polarized: Yes/No/Doesn't matter?

I'm leaning towards a more fashionable look, as I can then also wear it when not doing sport. The more "specialised" glasses might have you standing our like a twat on the game drive.

Thoughts?

A lot will depend on whether you are a sweater or not. Running doesn't evaporate the sweat drip like riding and it's generally more bumpy, so sweat tends to drip and pool on the inside of the lenses.

I tried heaps but gave up. I now just embrace my crows feet and squinty eyes.

When I did try, I uses one of those floating neck thingies to catch them or put them round my neck tucked into my shirt to store when not in use.

Nerdy? 100%... But form over function when it comes to sportsing.

The 'best' I ever had were a set of Julbo glasses. Some of them bend and flex and are super hardy. If I were going to buy any sunnies for running I would buy those.

I am a sweater, but I do like to run with a cap, which seems to pull most of the sweat from my head away from the eye/glasses area. My thinking is to go for a more "open" look, where the frame and lens is nowhere near my skin on the perimeter and only touches my nose. That should reduce the likelihood of a drop bouncing onto the lens.

I tried an "enclosed" set once, it fogged up within a second ;) So I know what will NOT work for me luckily.

Thanks, I'll look into Julbo, and the "dork string" as protection of the glasses.
