candz1 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 anyone here using a wrist based "hr"? How do you get it to read an accurate HR on a spinning bike? I had my FR235 on, did a spinning session and had it on "Other" activity setting...tells me my hr only maxed at 95 and most of the session was around 60 which is almost my resting hr. Am I putting it on the wrong setting??

I had similar, eventually bought a hr strap for cycling so the watch can sit on the handlebars where I can see it and I can get a hr reading candz1 1
Mudsimus Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I've done some extensive reading on wrist HR the last week. Like Dave said for cycling you need to get it a little tighter and away from the wrist. How is the accuracy when running?
dave303e Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I absolutely love the wrist hr for running, it is more than accurate enough, and no strap to chafe or forget at home. Frosty 1
Stretch Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I have no problems with the strap.. The only problem is the garmin ones get erratic when they get older. Will buy a polar strap next
candz1 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I went from strap heart rate to wrist and im just so relieved not to have the chafing! I dont care if my wrist hr is a little out from the strap...the lack of chaffing scars under my boobs farrrrrr outweigh the difference! Hacc and Bikes 2
shaper Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I moved from strap to wrist because both of my straps have died, a HRM-Tri and normal Garmin one. Cannot be bothered to replace them and am happy running in HR Zones, so accuracy should be ok. Was also getting fed up with the chafing too.

Will buy a polar strap nextJust make sure this isn't because the HR monitor needs to be reset. Apparently when it gets too full of data it starts to give funny readings. Take battery out, put battery in the wrong way around, leave for 5min, reassemble normally. Seems to work for me whenever I start getting odd HR readings.

It had stopped pairing completely.. Now it's bank to normal

SeaBee Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Candz, from what I've read the wrist based units are for some reason notoriously bad when cycling. So I ride with a strap, which causes no chafing (for me, anyway) But love running without it and the resulting HR values are good enough for me. It's not as if I'm going to be able to tell the difference between 153 and 156 BPM. candz1 1

Pulse Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 With cycling the upper body/arms are relatively passive, so bloodflow decreases and is preferentially sent to the legs. The wrist-based sensors then have a bit of difficulty picking up accurate readings. I use a strap when I cycle/spin/IDT, and wrist-based for running. candz1 1
Andrew Steer Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Don't know a lot about this specific model - but it looks a pretty good deal https://www.buycycle.co.za/mountain-bike/suunto-spartan-trainer-wrist-hr/
Dirkitech Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 (edited) Anyone using the Garmin Vivoactive 3? From reviews it seems to be a little better than the 735, plus the benefits of some extra features. It also looks much better, for what it's worth.I got the VA3music recently - besides the dud battery I got, it works perfectly for everything else. Mine doesn't have the elevation issue, but it does happen on some. The watch wont work for IM, but for my swims, runs, and cycles its been great. It's very easy to use since there isn't a huge amount of features that may never be used. I've removed all the activities I wont regularly use from the favorites, so I must say, the watch is very convenient and quick to get going with. Only other gripe I've had so far is it tends to count an extra lap or 2 over a km of pool swimming, but that's probably due to something I'm doing.Oh, it's worth adding that in spite of the dud battery, recording activities barely drains in any faster, gps only slightly more. The HR recordings have been very accurate and spot on. It doesn't flinch the reading at all, whether its at resting HR, or very high HR on a hot day, its possible to regulate your exertion based on the reading. Edited January 30, 2019 by Dirkitech
Ronniek Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Anyone here doing the Brackenfell 10km tonight? Keep an eye out for me I’ll be marshalling between the 1 and 2 km mark.
