b-rad Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 New York Marathon was really lekker. Fantastic organization and the support along the route is incredible. There are very few places on the route without a crowd. The bridges are the only real quiet spot. Weather was very cool to start with whilst waiting for the start so remember those old blankets and clothes to throw away. But for running the weather was fantastic. A little bit windy in parts but not terrible. I wouldn't consider the course to be fast compared to say Berlin. The bridges are long and have quite a slope to them and a number of the roads have a gentle uphill gradient which drains the energy a bit. Water tables are well stocked with water and Gatorade (no plastic sachets of course so practice drinking out the cups), and a number of stations have gels. The Vaseline on a stick is not some new energy product so take note of the message on the stick "please do not eat". I was a bit worried with the speed that people start off at but if you stick to your pace you'll pass people at a rapid rate later in the race. My run went according to plan. Stuck to my pace and went through half way right on plan in a few seconds over 1h27. Was hoping to finish strong and gain some time in the last 10 or so kms but it wasn't to be so the second half was 7 seconds faster Crossed the line in 2:53:57 for a new PB. After missing out on a Boston spot for 2020 I'm hoping I'll get in now for 2021. For those who've thought of running New York I'd definitely recommend it. Hacc Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 No race reports yet for Soweto and Kaapse Hoop? I had an excellent run (for a change) at Kaapse Hoop. The weather was beautiful, and my nutrition worked out perfectly. I felt very strong the first half and I had to tell myself to slow down on the downhills to reserve some energy for the lat 3 kms. My plan was to get as close as possible to sub 4 but I would be happy with a time under 4:15. This was my first marathon for the year and longest run since last year's Comrades. I did not look at my watch at all until I got to the 10 km to go mark (I had an hour for the last 10 km). In hindsight I should have done this earlier as I could have probably pushed a little bit harder earlier in the race. Wheels came off on the last 3 km as expected. I crossed the finish line in 4:03.Very very happy with my result after a very emotional and challenging running year! PS. I followed the sub-4 Asics plan, thank you to everyone that recommended it!!  Now to survive that little cycling race on the 17th... Lexx, candz1, Andrew Steer and 7 others 10
ScottCM Posted November 5, 2019 Author Posted November 5, 2019 Well done @Hacc, very happy for you. Is the nausea thing sorted out now? Andrew Steer and Hacc 2
dave303e Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 @Hacc -What was your nausea issue? And Solution? I am back to square onecwith similar, I have now ruined 7 races with nausea and vomiting. Seeing the doc and nutrition expert later in the week but always interested to hear more.
Hacc Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 Well done @Hacc, very happy for you. Is the nausea thing sorted out now?Thank you Scott! Not quite, still feeling it when I push myself, for example at the track or running uphills.I went for another gastroscopy yesterday. I am seeing the surgeon tomorrow for the results.

Seeing the doc and nutrition expert later in the week but always interested to hear more.I think I have silent reflux. It is reflux without experiencing heartburn. Symptoms include nausea, coughing, nasal drip, hoarseness, trouble breathing, that "lump" in your throat feeling. (I pretty much have all these symptoms, coughing is the worst after a run)It is mostly misdiagnosed because you don't experience heartburn.  I have been for a barium swallow and a gastroscopy, both have shown I have reflux.I was then prescribed Nexium by an ENT.He said it is the best medication out there for reflux. It didn't really make a difference to my nausea.  Is your nausea random? Do you experience nausea when you are not exercising?Do you experience any other symptoms?Â
shaper Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 @Hacc, congrats and well done!!  Did you use tailwind as your nutrition?
Hacc Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 @Hacc, congrats and well done!!  Did you use tailwind as your nutrition?Yes, I used Tailwind. I had one or two potatoes on the road as well.I also bought the Tailwind recovery drink, but that tasted horrible. shaper 1

Then I have to fight for a few hours to restock and get back on track and even them I am behind the 8 ball.

gifs Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 I managed a sub 4 at Soweto in 3:59:45. Plan was for a 3:50 but the second half was so tough in that heat. Was on track until 32km at which point I had to start taking walk breaks at the water points. In terms of nutrition, all I had was a quarter banana at about 30km. Never felt like I needed anything more. Rest of the time just water. I guess that is one of the benefits of being fat adapted. All in all I am fairly happy with the outcome, even though I did not manage to achieve my goal time, I still took 20mins off my PB. candz1, Andrew Steer, tjommies3 and 5 others 8

I just feel very nauseous. I would suggest you go see a specialist to do a gastroscopy. I know Nexium does help, so maybe it will help you. PS. One doctor suggested I stop running, I started laughing and told her it is not an option.
