Zama7 Posted February 18, 2020 Share Surely he was more deserving of sportsman of the year in 2018 when he set the world record. Maybe but sub-2 is probably a bigger achievement like the sub 10 100m or the sub 4 min mile. Hope Eluid destroys the Olympics and think he is running the Berlin Marathon again so might be able to come close two sub 2. Otherwise he will probably get the lifetime achievement award in a couple of years

But I usually think of Laureus as more of a human endeavour award. Sub 2 was a fairly artificial (maybe) event, but it just seemed to open a whole new door for potential. But then again Formula 1 isn't exactly a mass participation sport like running or soccer either. Eliud is doing London marathon. Kenenisa Bekele also running. It's gonna be a whopper marathon year.... Not to mention the Athletics at the Olympics... Andrew Steer Posted February 18, 2020 Share Surely he was more deserving of sportsman of the year in 2018 when he set the world record.Hundreds of world records set in sports yearly... how do you choose one sport? The sub 2 though, albeit an artificial attempt of sorts, defied what people had even thought was physiologically possible. It's an incredible feat to break any world record, but what Eliud did, was take 2 seconds off the world record, every kilometer, for 42.2 kilometers. It's going to be an iconic moment in all sport for a long time. It's quite possibly going to change the landscape of long distance running forever... Hamilton, drove the fastest car to victory... his team mate was second overall. We don't even know if he's the best driver of the year in all honesty... Messi, won the Spanish league with Barcelona in historically one of the worst seasons in La Liga history. It's no brainer for me, but I am obviously also biased, as are we all
Christie Posted February 18, 2020 Share Giving sportsman of the year to Kipchoge would be like giving it to an F1 driver, a sport where engineering is 90% of performance. O, wait...

Andrew Steer Posted February 18, 2020 Share When it is done in race conditions then it counts. No one claims their 5km pb on a treadmill in an air conditioned room.Except this wasn't on a treadmill in an air-conditioned room? The advantages he had were pacers the whole way and the pace car... no slip from the car, the distance was set us such, so just the slip of fellow human beings. Which he would also have for a large portion of a marathon in any case... How much advantage was that on his physical effort... not enough to laugh off this feat in my books, but I sense we can just agree to disagree on this one.
