Discovery Health - Vitality & Team Vitality plus everything else you need to know

Why do you use both?  You do not need your phone running strava.  Just record everything on your edge 500 then sync with strava.  HR will then be on strava

That is a good question, I guess in the beginning I was using strava to verify distances etc... I've never tried that, where would you sync it with strava?

Why doesn't Discovery check to see if there is GPS activity during the exercise when receiving data from Strava, at least then they will be able to confirm that the person did the activity instead of just pretending by manually creating a ride.

I agree with the points change as many do on this thread, I just think that they should have gone back to a similar points system to the one they had last year.

For someone like me, I struggle getting my heart rate to 80 % let alone trying to maintain it there for extended periods of time, so I will always only get a maximum of 300 per ride...

Also should Discovery only work for certain devices then Discovery should sell those devices at a discounted rate dependent on your status (silver, gold, diamond etc). this would then be similar to what Momentum is offering.

Because GPS activity by itself is useless... you could be driving in your car on the way to work. Avg speed 20kph if you're in traffic and boom.

Hence the requirement for HR data.

As for the momentum discounts - yeah, tried that route myself to see if it'd work. They're not the best prices and seem to be based on inflated RRP's si you can mostly get better prices elsewhere if you look hard enough. And through Vitality you can still get a discount on the fitness devices, just not a tiered discount...

I fortunately don't exercise because of the rewards so it doesn't worry me one way or another and as I've said before the more complicated it becomes the less I care to worry about it.

I use Strava currently to update my Vitality but also have all my stuff in Garmin Connect. I will change it to link there towards the end of the month. Up till now I have had no problems.

must disagree miles

am on diamond on discovery and about 30 points off private club with momentum. (Medical aid with one and life cover with the other)

the momentum benefits on my life policies are already at 40% and i get that as a discount monthly dont have to wait 5 years!

As for the gear they sell the prices are really good, I have been in the market for a garmin 810 can get it new from them at R5639.40, have been keeping an eye on the classifieds here and nothing close to that.

With discovery you should be able to pick it up at sportsman warehouse and a portion will be refunded by discovery from what i understand.

I mainly use strava, if ever they start not recognizing it anymore, they can maar keep their smoothies. I personally feel that they bit of a bit more than they thought they could chew by these rewards, and by doing so screwed people as soon as they got the apple watches. It's not very bright to change point systems every 2nd month, in my opinion they should have done proper homework first, then tested the system, fixed all the bugs, then introduced it to the public. But that's just my opinion, and it's given on a day when i'm not in the best of moods. Bottom's up

On this, I do not disagree at all. The savings on the life premiums are substantial if you're on the upper end of the spectrum.

I just raised the point of the "discounts" on the devices as I was looking at getting my Fenix through those avenues myself. It turned out to be much of a muchness - 25% discount at Sportsmans was about the same as the Multiply Discounted Rate, and both were more expensive than I eventually got the Fenix for in the end...

Case in point - Garmin Fenix Performer Bundle = R 9,899 - 40% (on pvt club) = R 5,939.

Sportsmans price for same item = R 8,900. Subtract R 1,000 Vitality discount and it's R 7,900. Still R2k above the Momentum one, but you see what I'm saying.

I paid R 5,800 for mine, but in the current market it'll be difficult to get one for that...

Moral of the story is don't get sucked in by the "40% off" - in many cases, the RRP prices are inflated, so you need to look around to determine if the deal you're getting is a good one.

Same as for camera equipment - the prices WITH discount are in many cases more or the same as you would pay at a dedicated, well stocked specialist camera place.

I'm sure there are some good deals on there, but for me the primary benefit of Multiply are the Life Policy rebates, flight discounts and Smart Shopper multiplier. Gym benefit is also a good one, if you treat it properly...

What if you driving your car with a HR monitor on ?

I know it's a bit extreme but of people are cheating the system they'll find a loop hole.

Discovery have really made their name GAT with these changes.

Now majority of the participants are unhappy.

unless your driving makes you maintain an average 70% of your Age related max HR, you will only get 100 points.

If it does, you're also driving like a poooes

BTW - I fully support a tiered discount model. It's far better than flat. At the moment it is semi-tiered, in that it starts off at 10%, you do an online assessment and it moves to 15% then you do a fitness assessment and it's 25%.

Personally, I prefer the Multiply version with the partner store discounts being related to your status (not talking about the Discovery Card side, in which they definitely are related to your status - talking about the Healthy Gear / Healthy Food / Healthy Care discounts)

I don't know if this has been brought up.

I use a garmin edge 500 and strava when riding. I could never get my heart rate to link on strava. Last night when I started strava up boom it showed my heart rate, not accurate but its there all of a sudden.

Not a complaint just an observation. Anyone know how it would have happened, more curious...

If you use a garmin and load to strava it will show Hr , but to record Hr through strava you have to have strava premium .

Plenty of these in JHB.

Just hook up a HR monitor to a taxi driver and you'll be sorted.

Ironically a 3 - 4 hour base ride will also get you 100 points.

Last year I think they had a better balance, this year started off too easy and now they've gone completely in the opposite direction.

I think they should layer the points a lot more, like you suggested yesterday.
