You don't need half the tools and spares

It is ok to sometimes carry your bike

No noisy gears and shifters

minimal maintenance

There is no race you cannot do on a SS

CHEAP

Winning/speed is not a issue , it's about the ride now .

all you have to do is keep the chain clean and lubed

Remember, keep your chains lubed and your guns loaded, we're all in this together even if we're alone.

I have learned that there is approximately one stretch of road of roughly 300m in a 50 kilometer radius around my house that is ideally suited to the gearing on my bike. Otherwise I'm either under geared or over geared.

I've also learned to stop reaching for the phantom shifters and just HTFU and pedal on the hills, and to enjoy freewheeling on the downhills.

Finally, it's shown me what a moron I am - I have plenty of serviceable bikes on which to have fun, and yet I choose the single speed out of some romanticised idea of simplicity, freedom and hipsterness. I then curse and swear and hate my life for the entire ride, only to repeat the cycle of abuse a few days later...

Made me a much better climber and overall rider .When I ride my geared bikes after I have ridden the SS for a few weeks .I find it hard not to stand and climb .Gives a good workout on your arms and core muscles .It regularly turns out to be my Gym session on a bike and incudes a face muscle workout .It brings new conversation to the group ride ,especially weight becomes a very important topic ,until you tell them that your bike weighs more than his S- works and you still managed to keep up on the climbs
