Boot sale (a British term for what is essentially an ad-hoc flea market)

We all have cycling bits 'n bobs that we have no real use for but often feel that putting it up on sale is too much hassle.

Perhaps a bike park could do a boot sale every once in a while. People can bring whatever they can fit into their car and sell it "from the boot". NO trailers, just the car or bakkie. No shops.

That's a brilliant idea. You should approach your bike parks and suggest it. Will increase feet through gates for them too.

I mentioned this a year or so ago with regard to Northern Farm. Sadly I am not in SA long enough to organise it.

I really believe it would work as so many people have loads of cycling related bits and pieces about the house/shed/garage.

NF could work well on a busy day, they could set up an area for the "car booters" and even charge a small traders fee. Can raise a bit for the Diepsloot cycling program....beneficial all round.

Modders is another venue that could work.

Edited to add Modders as a similar type of venue as NF.

When car boot sales started back in the early 80's they were brilliant. Schools and churches wanting to raise a bit of money would hold them on playing fields or car parks.

People would fill their car boots with stuff from their garages or lofts (in the UK everyone puts stuff in the loft!) Parents throwing out grown up kids old toys, people's unused or unwanted Christmas presents, clothes and household items they didn't want anymore, tools, small bits of furniture etc etc.

I found a load of old annuals that I'd had as a kid which I bought for pennies, re-read and then sold on. The Beano, The Dandy etc.

Happy days.

I for one have loads of bits & bobs but don't forsee myself standing around for a couple hours trying to flog them, I think that's the very reason some of us didn't put them up for sale in the classifieds in the first place.

If there is anybody interested in getting this going in jhb let me know we could arrange something. There are already flea markets in operation around Joburg and charges are as low as r30- for a table / pop up stall etc. I will most certainly support this iniative as I am building 3 bikes myself. In the car parts world it is called a "swap meet", perhaps we could do the same. ????

A Cape Town Swap meet would be awesome... we had something like that in Sydney a while back.

Maybe the guys at the Uitsig bike park would be up for it. They just did a great sale day for everyone but it wasn't widely advertised and was mainly dirt stuff.

Felt sorry for the guys there. They took in all the stuff, recorded it, tagged it, over saw the sale, had to deal with the cash / non sold items and everything else. Only took 10% as well. Maybe they'd be happy for more people and less hassle!

I have a few boxes of odds and bobs, also can't see me standing negotiating with tyre kickers all day in the sun, as said that's why we stuck with theses items
