Guys go and speak to cyclists that have been hijacked.....first thing they all say ""it happened so fast"

How are you going to get your gun out from under your shirt while riding??

How will you drawn it if you laying on your back?

That's what I was thinking...one minute you're bombing down Rhodes Memorial next thing you're on your back with two guys rummaging through your pockets...absolutely no time to pull and shoot!

More riders carrying firearms. I can just see the hub lost and found

"Lost 9mm Glock43, Lost while riding the Spruit Saturday between 6am and 8 am."

I don't think carrying guns is the answer, you will be mugged for your gun by a bigger and more organised group. A firearm is worth more than a bicycle to a criminal.

Get a GPS, hide it on your bike. If you are mugged, then you can hire a really aggressive person to retrieve your bike for you. I believe you are unlikely to be killed in a bike mugging.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. If it becomes common knowledge that cyclists carry guns then we'll become targets for our guns. And the gangs will be bigger, better hidden to surprise you and all armed. It just pushes the bar up 5 notches.

Months of basic training ...20 month in a bush war in angola...3 years of township duty...carrying a firearm on stage 1 and 25 years packing ...i not sure how more training i would need.

Every single day..........carrying a gun or packing as you say is very different from using it everyday.....it should become second instinct......repetition is the only training that is effective....I will say it again......before most cyclists get to use their firearm they will be lying on the ground.....or would have been stabbed or shot......the real training and skill begins with how calm and confident people can remain and then their ability to negotiate without sounding desperate or scared......

Surely just insure your bike and hand it off with a wave as you think of your next replacement? Bike is not worth a shoot out.

If you are worried about self defense, by the time you have gone about pulling out your "piece" the perp would have made swiss cheese of you.

I just cannot see it ending well

I heard that a cyclist was attacked this morning at the cnr of Welling/Klipheuwel rd and the new Okavango Blvd extension.

He stopped to relieve himself, and was attacked from behind by a perp wielding a wooden Batton/Truncheon.

He managed to ward of the second blow to his head and disarmed the perp by kicking him in the shins and then taking off the batton. Sounds like he managed to get in a few blows with the attackers former weapon, and the perp then wisely decided that the scenario is not like he planned it, and took off.

Cyclist went for medical attention, only blow to the head, otherwise he was unscathed.

Turns out the blood he was covered with was the attackers.....

This old debate again. Any successful hijackings been prevented by pulling out your gun that we know of?

Last i heard when you go for those hijack training courses, is that they teach you to avoid the situation and not do anything that will give the hijackers reason to react badly (i.e. try kill you). Granted those are car hijackings but the same principal applies if its a bike jacking.

Its better to train yourself to be more aware and how to avoid hijack situations or how to react when hijacked, focus on self defence more than trying to be Rambo.

Or a CZ100

I had a CZ100 for many years. Very safe, reliable pistol. The problem I found was that the trigger pull, being DAO was a little lazy. I am now armed with a Glock 19 and will not use another firearm.

Having said this, I have been kicking around the idea of a G42, it's referred to as a pocket pistol and would be ideal to carry on a bike. I think it's got 5/6 in the clip and one in the chamber. I'm not quite sure of the availability of effective ammo for the .380 auto though.

Well effing done to this guy! However, if the perp managed to get up and run away, he didn't beat him hard enough..

I live on a game reserve, so when I do long rides outside the reserve I go past a few rural communities. It's pretty safe I think, if anything ever happens it'll be opportunistic and probably some guy high on drugs or alcohol feeling brave. But I am on my own and pretty far away from home.. So for such an instance I carry a knife in my back pocket (it's in a hard plastic sheaf so no chance of stabbing myself during a fall). If some windgat young punk or druggie try's something, at least I can surprise them by pulling out my own knife. If there's a gun or a group of guys, I'll wave goodbye to my bike and start dreaming about the new one I can buy with the insurance money.

The way I see it, for a single rider to carry a gun while riding is a bad idea (ambush, suprise aspect, knocked off the bike, disorientated etc etc)

However, for one person in a group to carry is a different story. So long as that person never rides at the front or at the back of the group, the suprise aspect is greatly reduced, there will be time to react, and chances are the weapon can be used effectively.

The only problem with this is that the shooter needs to be a very cool, calm person, and well trained in the use of guns. It won't help if he is a Rambo type personality who rolls off the bike, draws the weapon and starts blasting away, possibly injuring or killing his riding companions.

My sincere 2c. Look at the number of deaths resulting from bike jackings, I'm not sure I can recall any. If cyclists start carrying guns there might be, though.

Get insurance, hand over your stuff and walk away alive and unharmed. Report it to the cops, maybe they get caught, maybe they don't. Then go home to your family and start planning what new bike you're going to get.
