The holy grail - Just being fit

I've been slacking for the past two months after my last tri, and since January been really struggling to get back into training.

Is it just me, once I've lost my fitness level, it is SOOOO tough to break through that fitness barrier again, too such an extent that you are borderline just wanting to give up that's how tough it is. I know once I push through and I reach that level, training becomes a breeze, but it just feels everytime I have a lapse and have to get back into training it gets harder and harder to reach that fitness level...

Am I alone here?? :-(

I have just started riding again after a serious bike accident on 22 December 2015.

So I am struggling to get my mind around the lack of fitness and the mental barrier of not wanting to push too hard in case I fall off again.

yeah same problem here. I used to train and ride a lot to get fit for events, do the event, but then for whatever reason I stop riding. Especially from October onwards when it's so hot and most of the races are over. So it was a continuous process of starting from scratch, reach a reasonable fitness level and then stop and start from scratch again. And yes, once you lose your fitness level it is kuk to train and get back to that level

Over November/December last year I made a point of continuing to ride, so the fitness levels haven't dropped too much luckily

Nope, not just you. Was off the bike for 10 weeks or so due to cracked ribs and the corresponding injuries. Fitness went down the toilet. Struggling to regain it, but it's getting better. You'll probably find that it will start coming back faster if you just push on with it.

My running fitness though (not that I had any to begin with) has all but gone. I was on my way to a 10k plan thing, but nah. Not happening.

I understand how you feel. Seems to be a slog getting fit. I was making good progress until I had an "involuntary dismount" at Northern Farm on Saturday - Wrist poked. Another 2 weeks off the bike.

You definitely not alone. Also had a 2 month break after I broke my collarbone. Was training indoors but it wasn't the same and I struggled in the first month back on the road.

Many years ago I defined my own personal fitness holy grail by a simple yardstick: I want my base fitness to always be such that I can jump on the bike any day of the year and complete an Argus.

It doesn't have to be a fast one, and I may suffer and be stuffed afterwards, but as long as I feel fairly confident that I can do it at the drop of a hat, I'm happy.

Of course, some years I have chased much higher levels of fitness, but for me anyway, that is only sustainable for a few months at a time (6 months maximum), otherwise life takes a second place to cycling, and that doesn't work for me. When family and my other interests are neglected, I become too one dimensional, and I don't like that. I love cycling, but I cannot live on it alone!

Weird,...I was just about to Google, "Get fit in two weeks",..when I unconsciously went on Bike Hub hehe...#addiction

Anyway, I had my best year of Fitness and Performance in 2014,..doing well in races, and at least, averaged 5 rides a week. Then, after a life long denial, I was diagnosed with clinical depression in January 2015, and since then, I've really struggled to get back to "that" level of fitness and even the "will" to perform, at least like I had before I was diagnosed.

I'm sure its got to do with the meds I have to take, but then the doc ensured me it doesn't affect that part of me at all....

Anyway, I still love to ride, and that will never change :)

Yeah I've had it a lot this year. With marriage, a move to Cape Town, a new job promotion, extra travel, I've lost the little bit of fitness I had. And every time I'm close to getting it back, something else gets in the way.

I've found that riding sans bike computer, strava, etc, has been the best way for me to get back into it. Riding without any goals, not knowing distance or average speed or any of the stupid details means I'm just out riding, and I turn back to home when I'm buggered. And I love it.

On a side note, in that phase right now and having jut popped the garmin back on the bike my stages is reporting my highest ever power - 2232 max watts. Must be something in my method:)

Ghee whiz....so 10 years after basically stopping(from like semi-pro riding on the tar) now I am feeling fantastic again- what changed?!? Well I am extremely dedicated to getting fit and lean again. 3 months ago got a single speed bike which motivated me to just get slighly fit, then my running became pretty good and then moved onto a bigboy bicycle(MTB off course) and even joined the gym(first time ever in my life) and a fitness group( mostly for the hot eye candy running the show).

3 Months later and I am feeling excellent!! Did a 70km mtb race a week ago, doing constant 5 and 10km runs and pumping some metal just for the extra toning.

What I can say to all of you- getting back into it Sucks, but man it feels oh SOOoooo goood!!!! Just keep on keeping on!!

3 Amazing Methods You Won't Believe to Get Fit Fast. Personal Trainers will hate you!

1. Get a new bike, bib, piece of equipment or whatnot. Whenever one of my training buddies does this they somehow get superfit in no time.

2. Join some kind of sadistic training group.

3. Off-days are important as well - even more important than letting than youngster beat you on an uphill.

These are some of the the rules I live by after my bike Judo'ed me in December.

Stop being a wuss and get some runs in, its perfect for times when you dont have enough time for a ride but still need a workout.

I probably should, but I despise running. Plus, I'm getting far more riding in nowadays. Far rather be doing that and getting better at technical stuff than running (at the moment)
