Went to scope out what trails have been opened today and Harry took some photo's of the trails that look beautiful(our own little corner of NZ?) There were no dogs or walkers on the trails, but quite a few bikers, even at 11am!

Thanks to those involved in getting the trails opened and well done to all of you who submitted approvals to the city of Cape Town!- it's a good start and I'm hoping everyone on the trail can act respectfully towards each other so that the more technical trails can be opened up to cyclists in the future.

I don'T reallY know your neck of the woods, but those pics are enough to want to come take a look

memories! grew up right there, I remember there was a section I would always walk down (dont think part of the legal route now) and after watching my first local MTB race (Jonkers nationals in '92) I went there the next day and rode the section........

Rode them this morning, from Southern Cross down to Tokai and back.

Really nice to have some trails which one can ride legally within easy distance.

I think everyone who rides those trails should be giving huge kudos to everyone involved in making it happen. Big thank you.

I met several dog walkers and runners, all very pleasant.

I slowed down, they held their dog where they thought it necessary and we all exchanged good mornings and hello's.

The trails are in great condition and fun to ride in both directions.

I think the only room for improvement would be that some of the road to dirt transitions are a bit brutal with squared off kerbs and deep storm channels. Thats a minor thing though, and I understand a difficult one to change.

As I was riding alone I did feel a little bit vulnerable on the bit next to the highway, especially going under the flyover with the tall reeds on either side..My Garmin shows I gave it a bit of extra gas through that section.

All in all though a great asset to have on our doorstep.

No need to feel nervous, I ride these trails alone during the week no problem.

There is a nice footpath alongside Southern Cross Dr which offers some nice climbing. Is it legal to ride there?I missed out on the Meadow.

Well it is  a pavement that  only seems to be used by Mtbikers,In the year i've been using it ,I have only come across 3 pedestrians.....its not greenbelt so dog-walkers can't complain.

I ride with my small white light on my handlebars to be more visible ...as you are riding towards oncoming traffic.

I have trimmed the bushes on the section in-front of De Hell a couple of times but need to go and trim again it gets quite tight.I requested the council to to it but it seems they will only respond if you actually live on that section.

Finally rode it on Sunday and what a pleasure! Big thumbs up and thank you to all involved in making it happen.  Once Tokai opens we'll actually have a fair bit to choose from in the Southern Suburbs

Its the evening thats the worst for walkers and dogs. At the very point of your first pic at the rock jump  I encountered a couple with 5-6 dogs a few days ago. Just before that is a left fork down a decent tech trail with rock gardens and such like. Off limits ...

That trail is a lot of fun down as well.

I hear from the City that there are moves afoot in te Spaanschemat Road area to create cycle or pedestrian lanes - no details yet but will try and find out this week.

Welcome as this will be, I was hoping for something a little less intensive and more aimed at the MTB set. Like clearing the #Rhodes Drive and other road verges and widening them in places so we have more safe off road links to the actual trails...
