So my rafter storage is coming along nicely.

Added some lighting too for night working and having the lights under the boards is a big improvement.

Also managed to get a spare double base set out of the way, won't be coming down any time soon as it was a serious b..ch to get up there!!!

Couple of pictures showing the mess and boarding up in progress:

Bit more progress has been made, seems I can do a max of 2 rings per evening with a bit of shaping before gluing the first one.

You can see the blade deflection in the bigger ring, its not an even cut from top to bottom so there are some gaps.

Oak plug which forms the bottom of the bowl is in the one shot, it will be turned down when Im closer to finishing but for now its structural so dont want to remove too much bulk from it.

Changed up the glue method for this next ring, it was easier to center this way then stack 3x 5kg weights on it.

You can see a bit of rough shaping on the two rings below the newly glued one, I think it will look quite nice in the end.

Did you get that bed up by using a "pulley system" with rope over the rafters?

I have racked up 2 rather heavy beds in this manner, and it is effortless for a single person to do, just takes a little time to pull up one side a bit, secure, lift the other side, and repeat until fully secured.

Amazing what one can do with a little leverage.

^This, I did the same thing a few years back with some nylon rope which was intended to secure the bed for storage in the rafters. Setting up a pulley system with a few loops is fairly straight forward and it was just a case of pulling and end then tying it off and pulling the other end.

Any reason why the shutterply is attached under the rafter beams rather than over it?

I did the same thing in my garage but have the ply sitting on top of the beams screwed down into it.

How did you attach the ply to the trusses and what is the distance between the trusses ?

Maybe you guys can assist? Window frame. The wood closest to the window is bare as the paint has flaked. Used Plascon Velvaglo on the frame but looks like something else is needed to get it the same level and looking right. I did sand the whole frame to get all the peeling paint off.

Between the frame and wall there are also cracks. Should I use painters mate to fill up the gaps?

If this is in the wrong section please feel free to move it.

You use wood filler to fill in the gaps and get it even, would probably have needed to do it before it was painted though.

wood filler is nice because it sands easily.

Builders mate might still work though to fill and sand even, then give it another coat.

I used 6 x 50mm wood screws with a hex head, the boards are 22mm in thickness.

The wood trusses varied between 740mm and 810mm width if my memory is still good.

The stresses on the screws is in the correct direction and well into the trusses. I won't be storing very heavy stuff either, mostly camping gear, odds and sods which aren't used often.

Nice!!

Possibly consider adding washers in the future. We have a similar setup on the farm, however it does get loaded fairly heavy, and the screws started tearing through the wood. Added some big washers and no issues from there. Long screws going into beams deep enough are insanely strong.

I might go back around and add them, thanks for the heads up.

I used 25 screws in a board measuring 2,440mm x 610mm, attached across 5 beams in total.

The safest option is placing the boards on top of the beams - I know that way you lose some space.

Using number 8 or even 10 screws will add a huge amount of strenght - and rivet washers are the ones to use.

Just be aware that if it does come down you will have a problem claiming from insurance.

Sorry for being a pain in the butt but you can never be too safe.

I did consider above the rafter storage but it would mean multiple cutouts to account for the cross members, also the rafters act as dividers for me to keep the stored items neat and tidy.

silicon or expanding foam in the gaps between frame and wall or even gaps in the frame itself. That will accomodate for any expansion and contraction that eventually cracks solid fillers.

Called a shephards hut, it's our first time and first one. Going to put it up in the caravan park. Sleeps 2 people, small tv/dining room, shower, basin and toilet. Steel construction and going to get covered with wooden planks.3d3f7cbeef2aee456b7b75a246851bcc.jpg

So we took the "hut" out of the "stoor" today so that I can get my vehicles back inside.6802e651226046e8a53a1dac8161e717.jpg
